It'll be in late August: I'm a hick from Alaska where the highest temps this summer have been hovering at 70.
What should I wear that won't make me roast in the heat but yet look sufficiently classy and respectable? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, it will most like still be pretty warm and humid. I would say linen, but that wrinkles like no one's business. Perhaps a simple shift dress in cotton.
Definitely conservative. I would go with a dark suit with a light blouse underneath so you can take the blazer off when you aren't in meetings. You are going to roast it has been hotter than hell here all summer and the humidity in August is usually somewhere around 200%. I'm sorry we have lots of monuments!

It's funny: when I tell people I'm heading to DC 8/24, they say "ugh" and wrinkle their nose. lol I don't care if it's going to be hot--we've had such a mild summer and I don't live there. A/C is available (if the power stays on ha ha) so I'm good with that

That is a good attitude! I am currently sitting in an office with shitty AC on a really hot & humid day. I am willing to admit I am bitter about your 70 degree weather.

I'd wear a suit, with a sleeveless shirt underneath, so you can remove the jacket when you're outside.
Violet, I'm in Baltimore, and also in a hot office. Blech.
I am actually outside of DC. I went out and got free moving boxes off of Craigslist at lunch and actually thought I was going to melt. Then to come back to a not cold office was special torture. Not that I am far now but I grew up outside of Baltimore (closer to Annapolis) I keep telling my H I am going to get a MD flag tattoo to not forget my roots.

This, when I have to travel to AZ or NV, I just do a skirt and blazer with sleeveless underneath. I also wear flip flops until I get to my destination and swap my shoes. I hate having sweaty feet!!
