I think it was a 1993 Mercury Sable. It had been my grandfather's car until he went out one day and bought himself a Grand Marquis without discussing it or anything with my grandmother. She was so pissed at him, that she shipped me their old car (which was only a couple of years old) across the country right away even though I was only 15 and couldn't yet drive. He passed away before I could drive it
Anyway, the car was a real problem car. I later found out that it had been sold by a shady dealer and the odometer showed signs of having been tampered with. It was a total old person car--like a huge boat of a car with super plush seats and a V6 engine. It also broke down constantly. Always with the overheating, the power steering leaks, the ignition going out, the squealing brakes... It was constantly in and out of the shop, even though it wasn't an old car. Eventually, my parents made me sell it because it cost so much to repair all the time. I have to say though, I learned a lot about cars/car maintenance in the year or so that I drove that thing and got stranded all over town.
A 1979 Chevy Malibu Station wagon. It was rust brown. Ugliest thing ever. But it had a new supercharged engine in it, so it hauled ass. It was a RWD too, but it was so huge that I never got stuck. It was perfect to nap in before school (we had to get there ungodly early in order to park in the school lot) and to haul my cello around.
I neglected to put oil in it () and the engine seized on the way to the All City music program.
1984 Subaru station wagon. It was amazing. Great in the snow, could hold all sorts of things and a great little manual. It was 13 years old and I bought it for $1500. All around solid investment.

My mom bought a 1970 Gremlin (the first in greater Boston, if I recall the story correctly) for $1800 new. She drove it until 1977 or so and then gave it to me. I drove it until about 1983 and passed it along to my brother who drove it across the country, the odometer passing 250,000 along the way. I'm still sad they stopped making them.
