Hopefully someone here might know something.
Without going into too many details, my SIL was admitted to the hospital yesterday and ended up being transferred to a larger hospital several hours away, where she is going to be staying for quite a while. BIL (her husband) is staying in a hotel there at the moment, but she will be there for, minimum, several weeks. Are there any charities that provide financial assistance in cases like this where someone is hospitalized far from home? (I know Ronald McDonald House does this for children, but obviously SIL is an adult.)
In the off chance they are in Houston and she needs a transplant Nora's home is a place that offers discounted facilities for families. Have they checked with the hospital? I am sure the patient advocates have some information on such charities in the area.
I hope whatever she is going through is not so serious to require a transplant. (Hugs)
The hospital I used to work for had maybe 10 small sleep rooms for families. Social workers worked it out with security to get the keys to the families. I agree with reaching out to social work. Actually, in my old hospital, the ladies at the welcome desk would have been able to give information about who to contact about the family sleep rooms, so they might start by asking at the information desk if the hospital has any facilities for out of town families.
A lot of hotels have a reduced hospital rate so make sure he asks about that until he can find a long-term option. We had friends who just went through a similar situation and got a pretty reasonable rate at a hotel for the few days before they were able to find long-term housing.
Depending on where you are, if you call 2-1-1, you will be connected to an information and referral hotline who may have information about services available in the area where they are.

He needs to find the hospital social workers who, if he can demonstrate financial need (and at least at the hospital I volunteer at the parameters for financial need for some kinds of financial assistance extends to families that have incomes of up to four times the federal poverty level) can provide help with hotels, groceries, parking, etc. And even if the family falls outside of financial assistance parameters, the SW can still help find a hotel room in a crowded city and tons of non financial support.

This was about 2 decades ago, but when my grandpa was going through cancer treatments, the hospital had rooms in nearby houses that spouses/family could rent out. I'm pretty sure it was a social worker that helped my grandma get into one.
Contact social services at the hospital. They very likely have a listing of low cost housing for families of patients.
IME, many hotels in the hospital areas will also have a weekly rate for patient families too. We have used this in both Houston and Albany, however, ou need to speak o the manager about this.
I am so sorry to hear about this. You might also want to see if there is anyone local who could help. I know I would be willing to help out a fellow GBCN'er in this situation.
