There's a Singer 90S on lighting deal tomorrow. Anyone have experience with this machine, good or bad? I have a Brother right now (don't know the model number but it's from Target) that occasionally craps out on me and I'm beginning to think about a new machine. I use my machine pretty regularly (2-3 hours every other day or more) and I want something reliable and somewhat workhorse-y.

Have you gotten a new sewing machine? I'm looking around for one - but I can't decide. I have a necchi that is older than I am, and it's just ridiculous to use. Every sewing project turns into a 4 day nightmare. I'm looking at the brother CS6000i or Singer7258, or maybe one of the "heavy duty" singers
I actually placed an order for one yesterday, Stingyshark! I decided against the Singer after talking with my local sewing machine dealer- he said that he sees Singers the most for repairs and didn't have many good things to say about their workmanship. I tried out a few Pfaffs in the store and ended up settling on the Pfaff Ambition Essential. It was like sewing through a cloud. My mom has had a Pfaff for a while now and I've loved working on it. It's supposed to arrive mid-January so I'll have more to say then, but I've consistently heard good things about Pfaffs, so I'm excited. I was only considering the 90S because of the lightning deal but I'm glad I passed.
I believe I have the Brother CS6000i, and while it's been a good machine for me (pretty heavy use for 3+ years), I just want something a little nicer. I feel like the feed dogs aren't feeding any more, and it seems like the tension loosens when I sew for a long time. I often end up with giant chunks of bobbin thread pulled up through the feed, which drives me insane. I probably use it a little more heavily than it's designed for, which may contribute to the problem. I've sewn a lot of multi-layer diaper inserts, which it does not like at all.
I have a 1952 singer. I took it for repair and was discussing with the authorized singer repair center (since the 1950's!) about a new machine.
he said to NEVER buy a new singer machine after the 1970's. thats when they bought out and they started being manufactured with parts from china and much more plastic. He said he only had 5 models on display because singer requires it but he never recommends them.
For similar money you can get a Janome and its much better quality. I had a singer 7444, it was $200 from target. It never started at center, it had issues with a walking foot. The adjuster never adjusted the needle position the same. It honestly was a hunk of junk.
