I have mentioned in a couple randoms thread about this family at A's school that has a duck in their van. She is not a mallard, she is a wood duck and they found her in the middle of the road when she was a baby. They tried to have her reintroduced to the wild, but it didn't work.
The duck comes to school pick-up, because she doesn't like being left at home alone.
I was really curious about the duck, because it was a really odd thing to look in and see. I am not posting this in a mean way, because I really like the family in question. The mother is super friendly and sweet, and her kids are adorable.
I actually love wood ducks, they are so beautiful. In the wild they tend to be pretty shy and elusive so it's especially odd that this duck is just like, "Welp, don't leave me out of the fun!" It's a sweet story.

We had a pet wood when I was a kid. at the end of our yard was the Des Planes river, with a forest preserve on the other side, so eventually the duck was able to leave on it's own in the wild.
I'm truly fascinated by this and think it's really cool. I wonder what do they do when they go on vacation? I don't imagine you can board a duck or that you can easily find a duck sitter.
We had a pet duck growing up (just your run of the mill white farm duck) and it followed us everywhere. Everyday down the drive was my kid brother followed by the dog, followed by the pygmy goat, followed by Oscar the big a$$ completely stupid but loveable Nubian goat and the duck.
The ducks' friends had all died for various reasons and it was just him. He wanted to be everywhere all the time. My dad eventually trained the duck to ride in the truck with him around the farm.

That's hilarious. I would not mind having a car duck, if it was litter trained. People though Joe Bunny was weird, but I would get another one in a minute, if my DH didn't want a dog.

We would get pet chickens at the vets office for boarding.
My grandfather gave me a duck for Easter when I was about 2. We were living in a four unti twin apartment in Northeast Philly at the time. My grandfather assured my parents it would be fun and then due in a couple weeks. He lived long enough to grow to full size and was a fabulous pet- we eventually gave him to our paperboy who lived in a strangely rural corner of Old Bustleton along a creek. We visited from time to time until we moved away.
