After using a macbook air for a few years now, I've decided to upgrade to the surface pro 3 in the spring. The specs are so much better and the touch screen is just amazing!

I have to admit, I hate touchscreens for laptops.
Or maybe I'm just being a stubborn dino?
Just because you hate it doesn't mean that you have to use it.
I bought a Lenovo Yoga Pro last month, which is very similar to the Surface Pro 3, but slightly larger and more powerful. As I've been learning how to use it, I am learning to appreciate the touch screen but it still operates as a laptop and you don't need to use it if you don't want to.
DH just bought me the 11" macbook air for Christmas. I like it a lot. I haven't actually used one with the retina display, but I'm not sure I would think it's worth it. This one has great screen quality and was actually pretty inexpensive compared to what I thought it might have been. I was a little worried when I went to look at the credit card after I opened it.

H got the 13" air for school and didn't get the retina display. Honestly, unless you do graphic arts, photography, or videography, I think it's kind of a waste. It's nice, but the normal display is fine too.

Oh I hated touchscreens for a long time. H got a surface from work and let me try it.
1. Scrolling and flipping through pages and selecting stuff becomes super easy.
2. Instead of typing, you can write on the screen and it turns it into text and it was accurate 99% of the time. If it does write folk instead of fork, you can select the word and it gives you suggestions and you can select one from it just like in your phone. It's so cool and easy that it makes me weep with joy.
3. Also because people have mentioned coloring books here, there is an app called fresh paint and it has coloring pages in it (but not like the kid ones, there are really detailed oil painting type) and you can color with a pen in super detail. This is probably not necessary but I love it so much, lol.

I agree with this.
I actually do graphics on my mac with retina display for work and its a royal pain because I'm never quite sure what people with a normal display are going to see. Even doing screenshots and sending them to someone requires a work around.
Assuming you don't need it for graphics or photography work, the display is fine but I wouldn't pay extra for it.
I have a MacBook Pro with Retina display and the retina display is pretty pointless for what I do with my laptop (GBCN, grocery lists, online shop, and writing science assessments). I'm sure the regular display would be fine.
I considered the Yoga2Pro, Surface, etc., but ultimately preferred the MacBook. DH has a Surface and I dislike having to use it. Going back and forth between the touchscreen and keyboard is clunky, but it's clunkier to NOT use the touchscreen. I'm sure it's definitely one of those things that is fine once you are used to it but I like my MacBook and it's cleaner/sleeker interface.

My H is in the market for a new laptop soon (like, within a week) and I will be needing a new laptop around March. We are both PC users converting to Mac for the first time lol.
H is considering the Pro mainly for the better specs when running computer games. He thinks the Air won't handle them well. Any experience with that?
I definitely don't need the retina display or the higher specs and will probably buy an Air in a few months.
I have the Air. Not sure if it has the retina display. I LOVE it. The only thing I don't like is that there is no cd drive. Besides that, I'm in love with it.
