The creators of this false binary (you either want justice for unarmed black men OR you care about the lives of police officers) can fuck themselves into oblivion
Not even a day has passed and the memes are starting
WHY DO PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY SUDDENLY THINK THAT RESISTING ARREST EQUALS A DEATH SENTENCE. WHY DO CHUCKLEFUCKS LIKE THAT KEEP TALKING ABOUT "OH, JUST DON'T RESIST. JUST DON'T BREAK THE LAW AND YOU'LL BE FINE." LIKE THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON HAVING A POLICE FORCE THAT IS ALSO THE JUDGE, JURY AND GODDAMN EXECUTIONER FOR IT'S CITIZENS. LIKE DUE GODDAMN PROCESS DOESN'T EXIST.
The "just don't break the law" bullshit is making me rage so much that I have been avoiding the Internet.
I don't even understand the 'can't breathe' stuff. Is that the new "dead"? I don't want to even read anymore of the stuff people are writing to try and figure it out
No, it was the last thing Eric garner said before he died.

the "I can't breathe" comes from this video of Eric Garner being murdered by police when he was put in an illegal choke hold. He had asthma and they used deadly force against him on suspicions that he was selling loose cigarettes. His death and lack of any consequences has caused a worldwide uproar. People (including celebrities) have been wearing shirts that say "I can't breathe" to shed light on his senseless death.

No, it was the last thing Eric garner said before he died.
And he said it eleven times.
It just makes me feel rage. How people are still managing to justify these deaths in their mind is beyond me. It does seem to affect blacks more than whites, but the amount of unchecked power that the police hold should scare the fuck out of everyone.
The incident happened around the corner from my house yesterday. The feeling in the neighborhood is so tense it's palpable. The tension between cultural groups is increasing and I can't help but remember Crown Heights in '91.

I agree about the false binary, and I'm so sad and angry about all of this fuckery.
And if one more douchenozzle says "if he could SAY he couldn't breathe, he obviously COULD breathe" I'm going to lose my mind. Asthma means a closing airway, not a completely obstructed airway, and those people have obviously never had an asthma attack.

I got into it with a coworker about this. His response? "Clearly he could breathe because he was able to speak." My response? "Clearly he could not breathe since he's dead."
I'm on Long Island and I am so saddened by the attitudes of so many people I thought were good people. I got into a fight on thanksgiving with my mother in law about this and I am dreading Christmas. My husband's family has several NYPD officers and I just cant even get into it with them. I can't wrap my brain around the way they think.

I'm on the island too. The mentality is astounding. It seems that people here are simply incapable of comprehending any viewpoint other than their own. The willful ignorance is what's killing me.

Astounding is the perfect word for it. I will say I was surprised by people in my office who I thought for sure would take the other side, so that was at least refreshing. But it's the people who I was sure were good people that won't even contemplate for a second any other viewpoint. It's so disheartening.

I so agree with you!! I don't want to live in a country where I'm not allowed to question the tactics or motives of the police. Doesn't feel like freedom to me!
