I got a random box from Target last week. Inside was a kid's toy, one that DD already has. The billing name/address is someone we do not know. From the looks of it, our address was accidentally put in when the order was placed.
I called Target customer service and was told to just write Return to Sender on the box and send it out through USPS. The woman at the post office told me I had to pay for it, since I opened the box.
I just got into a circular argument with the latest customer service person. He informed me that "if I want to" my best option is to take it to my local Target and have them figure it out. I can't print a return slip because I'm not the original sender, and he didn't seem to want to get any information from me on the billing address.
I can swing by Target today, but I'm irritated that this seems to be my only option. Would you push for a supervisor to figure out if/how I could mail it, or just suck it up and go to Target during lunch?
So you were not billed for this right? If not, I would be tempted to donate the toy and let that be that. The original purchaser will get their ms replaced regardless and you have already made a valiant effort.

How will they get it replaced if they don't know that we got it instead of the intended recipient?
This happened with us as well this year. Target sent me two items when I only ordered one. Target DGAF. They said "if I wanted" I could try to stop by a local Target store and see if they could help.
We donated the toy.
LOL, I think this is in their script!
I'm probably overthinking it, but I"m just picturing Little Suzy not getting her Christmas present from Uncle Frank because it landed on our doorstep instead.

Because the person who bought it will be waiting for it and contact target to say they never got it. Target will send them another one.
Ohhhhhh I get it. Like the person who bought it had it sent to someone else... Sorry Im slow
Well at this point since you've already contacted target and told them you have it by mistake, there's not much else you can do. Even if you return the item to Target it's not going to increase the chance that they fill the order correctly for little Susie. Who I also now feel bad for lol.
I'd put some clear tape back over the box and take it back to the post office. They'll never know. The only place that has weirder customer service than Target is PO.
Really though, I'd just donate it and call it a day.
I would not make a second trip to the PO or go to no-fucks-given target the week of Christmas. You made a reasonable effort. Donate the toy or stick it in your gift closet.

Does it by any chance have the phone number of the purchaser? Like with the billing address? I know sometimes UPS does this. If so I would maybe try to contact the buyer to let them know it was mis-delivered so they can work it out from their end.
Or, if it was a simple solution (like the box was supposed to go to a house one street over and the address was entered wrong) I would hand-deliver out of the goodness of my heart, because it's Christmas.
Failing any of those things, I would find the nearest Toys for Tots donation bin and donate the toy.
I'm surprised that's what they told you to do. Maybe 6 months ago I got an order with a bunch of makeup stuff delivered to me from Target that I didn't order and when I called they said just to keep it and they'd send out a new order to the original purchaser. I would donate it.

I would google the name/address of the billing contact to try to let them know you got the gift but Target won't give you a return label, so they should follow up with Target to have it re-shipped. Then donate or re-gift.
So it's a toy that's age appropriate for your daughter? I ask because I got a random Target toy in the mail and there was a receipt with a name on it I didn't recognize. I thought it may be a SS present. It was. BUT the person's name was wrong. and they have no idea how it got on the receipt. I brought it back to Target and got a gift credit and got something B wanted instead, after verifying it was for us.
I had a random toy that was shipped in a purchase last year (I had purchased a lot and ended up with some giant ride on toy). The store didn't have a record of sending it to me and didn't want it back since they couldn't figure out why I had it. I took it and donated it to a local toy drive.
I did order something that didn't get delivered to me (same order as above, I think). I called and they refunded my money. I'm sure if someone didn't get their present, the store would do the same.
