This is the 3rd year that I have done the reddit secret santa and it was the worst gift. I got some coffee press thing and I don't even drink. The last two years I got good gifts that the people actually put thought into. The person that I sent a gift to hasn't posted but I know they received it. I put a lot of effort into the gift too and actually got him stuff based on what he liked and wrote.
If I do it again think I might pay to do it because that seems to be where people actually put effort into it. I have done a number of other exchanges too and this was the first time I was disappointed.
I've wanted to participate for a few years now, but giving out my address makes me apprehensive. That, and it also seems like a lot of participants don't receive anything at all.
.
Hold the phone. People actually pay for the dubious honor of sending a gift to a stranger?
Yes, I think it's $9.99 for the year. Then you become an "elf" and you only get matched with other elves. You get matched earlier and elves are supposed to be more committed to sending better gifts. It's also how the celebrities participate.
My husband did and got some Star Wars cookie cutters and an R2-D2 measuring cups set. We used the cookie cutters for our Christmas cookies and the measuring cups are really just pretty to look at and not very practical. I've definitely enjoyed his secret Santa gift
How much are you supposed to spend on these gifts? Some of this stuff seems pretty expensive to be sending to strangers.

They suggest about $20 but it's up to you.
I did a Mavel one for my son and he never received his gift. But when he got rematched that Santa went a above and beyond and spend close to $100 on him.
I did. I put in my profile that my favorite gift would be a donation to Heifer International and maybe some neat snacks. What I got was a voucher for $200 to ModestNeeds.org and a lovely necklace that made my day.
