How often do you find sets missing pieces? She got one big one for Christmas and so far it's had three pieces missing. She does them on a mat thingy, so I know they didn't disappear.
David's has a lot of sets, at least 50 and we have never had this happen. He sometimes loses them and THINKS it's missing but we always eventually find it.
We've had many sets and never had a piece missing. What happens a lot to me is I'll use the wrong piece somewhere because I have a color deficiency and man those Lego books are so hard for me! LOL. Also, they sometimes get stuck in the bag.
I bought one of girls the large lego house last Christmas. When we opened it up, 3 of the bags were missing. So not pieces, but bags!! We took it back and unfortunately, Target was out of the one we had but she ended up picking something else. That is it. So between 4 kids, I can easily say 10 sets from small to large for each child, @40 sets - that is the only time.

This is us - we have a LOT of Legos. I've been really impressed by their amazing quality control, actually. I am continually amazed at how every single piece is there. And the thoughtfully included little extra pieces for the super tiny ones are a nice touch, too.
We have an extreme number of lego. We had an advent calendar missing a head once. I got a boxed set of windows and doors that was missing one bag and had a second of another. I was missing a piece of garage door on another. It was weird because those all happened within 6 months of each other.
The Advent calendar was the trickiest because it was a licensed Star Wars piece so they required a code off the box for replacement. We had a new set of doors and windows sent to us and we kept the messed up one. It's really easy to request a replacement piece on the website unless it's licensed, but you can call too.
Often times a missing piece for us is stuck in a bag. We've had a few other missing pieces since but I found replacements in our existing Lego.
I've always assumed any missing pieces were lost. I can only think of one time we couldn't find a piece or pull one similar enough out of the random Lego drawer.

How do you keep all your Legos together?
what about Legos that aren't part of a set? I just bought like 3000 Legos from a mom on a Mom2Mom site. Just random pieces because even though I have bought J sets I don't think he's ready to keep track of them. I told him if he can keep all his random Lego's together for 2 months without me finding them, stepping on them, or the dogs eating them he can try one of the sets I bought him but haven't given him yet. I will start with one of the small sets.
Lol. I guess (know) I'm really overtired because even though I read the OP, I thought we were talking about losing pieces after we'd had the set a while and put it together multiple times. So I started reading responses and was feeling like a terrible mom for having missing pieces.

Out of the box, we've never had a missing piece.
LOL this is exactly what I did. My kids take about 3 seconds to lose pieces after the thing is put together.

Ds builds them once, plays with them for a bit, and then either he or G end up taking them apart and I just toss them in the Lego drawer with all of the other loose Legos. Trying to store them in sets and disassemble/reassemble them would make me stroke out.
