Best meal I've ever had, ever ever, was cooked and devoured in the basement of a Sikh temple after services.
Sikhs know how to cook and eat.
Fact. not a stereotype. Fact.

damn man. the only close sikh associate I had couldn't cook for shit. Dude didn't even know how to do his own laundry and once paid me $5/load to catch up on the mountain growing in his room.
But when he went to the indian restaurant with me they'd actually give me the good spicy stuff, so I'll forgive him.
On a message board prone to pile-ups, sure they can.
Casmgn - You have totes missed the point. Continue to miss the point. The point is for far off the Y axis that I hope they find it on Mars for you.
What do you want us to tell you? What would make you happy here? Just tell us what you need us to say so that KateAggie's dog doesn't have to read this thread anymore.
tell her she's the bestest person ever and is WAY MORE FUCKING THOUGHTFUL than you could ever THINK of being, and maybe this will all end. then you can tell her that no matter what the other 40 posters on here have said, what she did was right and the LEAST socially awkward thing that's ever been done. finish it off with thanking her for educating all of us on a subject that, while many may have actually known the information, we must be completely lacking in any knowlege of if we would ever hold back from running up to every gas station attendant in New Jersey and offering to mourn with.
I am POSITIVE that guy went home and told his family about how he connected with the girl who apologized randomly for a tragic shooting hundreds of miles away on a VERY BASIC HUMAN LEVEL.
or that he felt bad for not saying how sorry he was about Aurora.

My former work brought me there, to speak with people after services about their rights in the wake of 9-11.
it was amazing, rows of plates and cushions on the floor, easily 300 place settings... Sit down, and women started coming around with food...
I was initially all, †oh, no, I shouldn't, I'm here for work...†But... No...

duh.
I don't think I am the most thoughtful person ever - although I try my best to be thoughtful and compassionate, I often fail and have made it a goal to continue to work hard at this. Given many of the statements in this thread, it does appear that many people did not actually have the information, especially about the Sikh appearance and how Sikhs have come out specifically saying they appreciate their fellow Americans reaching out to them in solidarity because this is a tragedy that affects the Sikh community as a whole. Finally, I don't think that everyone should run out to a gas station in NJ - everyone has their own way of expressing their own thoughts and messages.

And I say that it's you who continue to miss the point. We clearly live on two different planets, and you all can insert whatever snarky comments you'd like here, but I'm quite happy on my planet where compassion and outrage at hate crimes isn't weird or wrong or a product of "white guilt", and where one can correctly identify other people due to very obvious characteristics without being accused of "profiling", and where a human being can reach out to a stranger and connect on a basic human level.
Did you see where I said it was wrong of you to tell him what happened? Yes or No.
Did you read where I said you were profiling? Yes or No?
We've talked at length on this board about White Privilege. I don't recall a bunch of white guilt threads, but it's in the same family. It's kinda like what happened to my friend where after watching The Help, this white lady stood up and said she that we should let our black sisters go first. Oh. Ok. (white guilt)
Like I said, we get it. You wanted to reach out. Show that you hurt just like everyone else. It's cool. It's ok. Your words weren't the 1st choice for a lot of people because to them it felt awkward. But, obviously you feel some kinda way about what you did and you think it was right, so, for this I give you ...

I really think all casmgn wanted was a "oh, don't feel bad about ruining his night! That was SO SWEET of you! And better he heard it from you than someone mistaking him for a Muslim!"
or something.
My brain hurts.
Nope, not at all. I thought I'd get a few "oh noes, that sucks!" or "hopefully his shift is over soon so he can go home and talk to his family". I don't think I deserve admiration for saying something to him, but I also don't think I deserve criticism and vitriol.

This situation isn't like The Help at all. I didn't say he should be extended some special priveleges, I only expressed my sympathy and disgust for what happened. And people started with the vitriol before I even wrote about exactly what I said, so it had nothing to do with the words used.

I can't find a gif of victim juice, but hre you are:
So, when I was in college, there was this German student that would apologize to people for the Holocaust and Hitler whenever she learned they were Jewish.
Everyone would talk about how weird she was. She stopped after a month or so because she figured out that it was a weird thing to do. She's a good friend of mine now, and she now laughs at how absurd this was, but she had German guilt, and that's what she thought she was supposed to do.
The only point of this story is to work in a Hitler reference.

The circle is almost complete. We need an EBT and Skittles reference and a Rush Limbaugh comment and we can close the circle.

I think this might be the best and most appropriate invoking of Hitler ever. Ever.

Other people started with the vitriol? Really? Go back and read the first page. There were a bunch of "hhhmm" and "well that's odd" and "do you live near where this happend" comments, and then you said something along the lines of "raging bitches with holier-than-thou attitudes." Do you think that maybe that's why people got a little more direct and negative with you? You calling them bitches and whatnot? Maybe?

Well, Germans are quite sensitive to this history because they face a lot of discriminate in Europe even today because of the Holocaust. DH has German relatives who are in their 20's and have experienced hateful comments from other Europeans when they have traveled. So it's weird in the US context, but definitely has a more normal basis in the European context.

ok, seriously. you're just trolling now, right? between this and the white dude comment - I refuse to believe that you're for real.

No, I'm not trolling. This is a very real thing.
His cousins even talked about how the last World Cup was the first time Germans really even felt comfortable flying the German flag, because they have always been afraid that showing pride in the flag would be misinterpreted. And if you go around Germany, you rarely see the German flag flying still - it's mainly the flag of the province.
