Yeah, since we have central heating, we can't justify the expense to add air conditioning since it would have to be for the whole house. However, we definitely NEED a portable unit for our bedroom, no question!! Our bedroom faces due west, is on the second floor, and has no shade since it overlooks the gravel driveway. window units won't quite work easily since we have side-sliding vinyl windows, otherwise this would have been resolved already! Instead, we're going to have to jury rig some sort of thing to keep it stable in the window and block the open space.
We have a pretty sweet window hookup AC. It is awesome. DH stole it to use in the upstairs office while he and BIL play Star Wars on-line. He better bring it back before we go to bed.
Once we get a house we will most likely have window units. We can't have them in our apartment because a) our landlord won't let us and b) the windows don't work with most units. I can barely stand not having a window unit if it gets over 80*. I used to get really sick as a kid when it was really hot out and I still do now no matter how much I hydrate. So it would be beneficial for me to have them just in case.

We have window units, but we don't have them set up right now. We have side sliding windows, and James cut a piece of plywood the exact right size so we can cover the rest of the opening of the window. We haven't used them since, I think, the summer of '08 - maybe '07. We are lucky because, although our bedrooms are due west, in our complex, there is another building and a row of garages reasonably close by and they block the sun pretty early in the evening. It still gets hot over there, but not as bad as it could.
I miss having a (habitable) basement! I would just go sleep there if we did! I could handle this heat otherwise, but can't sleep in it. Also, bummed about not getting as much work done in the garden as I planned since the areas I needed to work on are all full sun, and my body just doesn't handle direct sun/heat like that well. Even though I'm drinking water constantly, I still end up feeling ill (and sunburned despite frequent liberal sunscreen applications).
this was how I grew up (now we're in an apt so, no basement) - I think people are pretty wussy if they think they need A/C in Seattle...
Not all are wusses. My grandma has a medical condition that doesn't allow her to sweat. She overheats very easily and passes out. It was very frightening at times. If it got above 75 she had a bag of ice around her neck so that she wouldn't overheat.
I totally understand the lack of AC here since there's only a handful of days it's necessary. I haven't been this hot in a few years, though. I told H that if we ever moved to the east coast again, there's no way I could handle the heat without AC.
I'm definitely pro-AC, even in Seattle. Our condo heats up pretty quickly and it's hard to cool it down once it's hot. I don't need the whole house to be cold, but I also don't feel the need to be dripping in sweat sitting in my house. And I can't ever fall asleep if it's hot, which really sucks at 5am the next morning when I have to be up. So, flame away, we have an amazing window unit a/c that usually lives in our bedroom, and last night we had a fan going in front of the a/c to keep the air moving. My parents' house has central a/c and I would totally opt for that if I could.

well, obviously I'm not talking about people who have medical conditions!

This was us (minus the central heating) - get what we have! It's great and works with laterally-sliding vinyl windows!
My parents have central A/C in their house, and we stay there when I visit, and let me tell you - I am much happier with it than without it. Their house used to get crazy hot because it was direct sunlight on the entire front of the house, so they got it. I am so happy they did!
If it's still hot tonight, I might go sleep at my parents tonight. Their house is a temperate 68 degrees year round. When they were building their house and decided to put in AC I made fun of them, but now I'm so jealous.

I just think the heat is easier to deal with the heat when you are younger. I know my parents want to be able to sleep through the night, and I figure that after so many years of sleepless nights raising kids, they should be comfortable now, right?
We do not have AC in our apt. in SF. Like Seattle, most places don't. We do have a standing fan that, when aimed directly on the bed, is generally good enough.
I totally agree with that. My parents have worked really hard for everything that they have. I just like giving them a hard time.
Picks - I think we have something like that in the basement! Which is why I'm so irked H won't go look at it and then bring it up. I'm afraid of our basement now after we had the black widow :/ Have to see what model it is to see if we can just order the window insert becauase I know we don't have that. It would be a heck of a lot easier on us than trying to make our own from wood and what not. We just aren't that handy. I like to think I am, but not with the tools we have. (Plus, H always nitpicks at me that he doesn't like the way I'm doing something until I get so pissed I throw a fit and make him do the stuff...and now he whines that I'm always planning projects for HIM to do.)
I swear I have the body of a 60 year old sometimes. I don't tolerate heat at all and I'm in pain from something almost constantly. I slept with an a/c unit in my room every summer from 13 to 19. If I didn't have the a/c on I couldn't sleep.
