I'm at work and catching bits and pieces of the news, but I don't know the whole story. I went to CEP first, but it looks like they're not talking about it?
From what I understand, the gunmen responsible for the shootings at the Charlie Hebdo (satire) magazine earlier this week in Paris were also responsible for the hostage situation at a Kosher grocery today. Twelve were killed at the magazine headquarters earlier this week. MSN news says that 5 people, including 3 gunmen, were found dead at the scene. I would assume this means two hostages have also been killed.
The motivation? The reasoning behind most terrorist acts is probably incomprehensible to most people. In this case, though, I think the magazine was attacked because it had published religious cartoons that the terrorists found offensive to their religion (Islam). They shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack.
The hostage situation today follows a two-day manhunt. I *think* the gunmen felt cornered and wanted to stall for time, which is why they took the hostages.
The situation is tragic and my heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones.
I need to edit what I wrote above: There were actually two separate raids in Paris today. The hostage situation at the Kosher grocery involved 1 gunman, who was linked to the Charlie Hebdo shootings. Some hostages were also killed, but I don't know how many.
The other raid took place elsewhere in Paris, where the two brothers who committed the Charlie Hebdo killings were hiding out. All 3 gunmen have been killed by police.
Here's where I got most of my information. It's kind of convoluted, but it does state there were two separate raids today (at the grocery with 1 gunman, and at a printworks with 2 gunmen who are also the suspects in the Charlie Hebdo shooting):
awick14, it doesn't seem so. At the time, I scrolled for a little bit looking at the thread titles and saw nothing re: France, Paris, Charlie Hebdo, shootings, etc. I thought for sure there would be multiple threads.
