When we bought our house we just hosted a get together. And we called it something along those lines.
I think "house warming" parties are suppose to be hosted by someone else as they are essentially asking for gifts. So go with the get together instead.
Random dinner parties/ bbqs are normal here as we usually go to one once a month or so anyways so it made sense in our family/circle of friends.
In my circle, it's perfectly appropriate to have a housewarming party, given for /thrown by yourselves. All of my friends who have bought houses have had one. IMO, it doesn't seem gift-grabby... Usually people give something small, like a bottle of wine or liquor, or a Yankee candle or something, nothing super expensive.
I do realize though that in some circles, especially on the nest/GBCN, they are seen as tacky. I think you just have to know your crowd. You could always just phrase it differently, like a dinner party, or bbq, or even cocktail party if you want to get fancy
I thought it was totally appropriate to throw your own housewarming party. it being your house and all... DH and I wanted to throw one, but it just never happened. we had to have it in the fall, scheduled around football games, and we could never find a free weekend for it.

We've thrown our own twice now. Usually people don't bring gifts, it's really just the first party we have at a new house once we've moved so people can see it. Usually just a Facebook invite, pretty low-key thing.
I would just call it a housewarming party. How is someone going to throw you a housewarming party at your own house? That would be weird, IMO. Around here no bats an eyelash if you throw your own housewarming.
