Is it okay to ask to borrow a neighbor's wifi? Century Link has fucked something up with ours and today is my Gramp's 97th bday and I really really want to be able to skype with him (he's dying and probably doesn't have too many days left). Would it be okay to ask a neighbor for their password tonight? I thought about just going to a close friend's house or panera or something, but I think it's going to be a little sad and I'd rather do it at home.
I don't see anything wrong with asking your neighbor. If my neighbor told me that they wanted to Skype with their 97 year old grandfather, I would absolutely let them use our router.
I would absolutely ask. Worst thing that can happen is they say no. They can easily change their password later, if they are concerned about you using it or whatever.
I'm sorry about your grandfather, hope you get to talk to him today.
I'd definitely ask. My neighbor set up my stepdaughter with his this summer since we don't have internet at home. He told us to let him know when we get a laptop of our own & he'd set us up some Time Warner already gets too much of his $.
If you have a relationship with them, I think it's fine to ask. The worst they can do is say no.
If you don't plan on finishing your call too late, tell them you will come over and let them know when you're finished, so they can change their password if they wish. And bring over a plate of cookies or something to thank them.
I'd be OK if a friendly and non-disruptive neighbor asked me for this favor like this, but I'd probably change my password the next day.
i know if my neighbor asked i'd be happy to let them.... but would also likely change the password if I didn't know them well and worried they might just start mooching off of it.
We surf off our neighbor's quite a bit when ours is down (apparently we have 2 different service companies) and have allowed them to do the same. We're great friends with them and have never had an issue. But yeah, ask first.
