If you or your SO have bad dandruff, What works to control it? My H needs help!
His dandruff is so bad, he's got it on his scalp, in his eyebrows, in his ears. Now he's starting to get it behind his ears. He's got fine hair and tends towards the greasy but it's hard to know what makes it so bad this time of year. And I'm sure it's dandruff and not psoriasis, in case anyone wondered.
I have this. The dr calls it seborrheic dermatitis. I was prescribed ketoconazole shampoo and elidel cream. It keeps it under control, but it seems to get worse in the winter, for me anyway.
OTC doesn't work, but IMO Selsun is the best of the OTC products.
A dermatologist can prescribe a steroid based product for all of these places to help a lot. I use a cream for behind my ears and eyebrows, and an alcohol based one for my hair that works really well.
Mine tends to get bad during stressful situations, several days use and it goes back nder control. I do need to be careful which shampoos and soaps I use, as these will exacerbate it too. Aveda, Kirkland and Neutrogena products tend to send it haywire, Rusk and H2O seems to keep it on even kee.l
I've done the steroid foam, which worked really well but can be really expensive. Now I mix some melaleuca oil into my shampoo, which has helped more than any off shampoo.
I have this inside my ears and I can usually cover it with my hair. Scrubbing it makes it worse. Steroid creams work as long as I am using it but it comes back a week later. The only time it completely disappeared was when I went though a low carb crash diet, and it came back a month after I went back to eating normally.

DH had really bad dandruff, to the point it would irritate his scalp and in would crack and bleed. I switched him from dandruff shampoo to either Aveda rosemary mint shampoo or Paul mital tea tree. Turns out DH is quite sensitive to product. I would also recomend a few drops of tea tree directly to the scalp.
Thanks y'all. Part of his problem is not being good about using the special shampoos and not using it/scrubbing well around his ears and eyebrows.
Scrubbing doesn't do a damn thing. In fact, it makes it even worse.

Mine disappeared while I was on IV antibiotics for 6 months. When the infection finally cleared, it came back with a vengeance within a couple months.
I used to have really bad dry scalp as a teen (I guess hormones) and T-Gel worked. Now I just have periods of very mild dry scalp during winter and H&S works just fine. For his eyebrows and ears, I would suggest a face cream. My H has to use face cream during winter too.

Head and Shoulders for his scalp. Get the one with selenium sulfide. It's stronger than ones that contain zinc pyrithione. He must use it often. For his skin, any anti-fungal type cream should help. The Malassezia that helps cause dandruff eats the sebum/oil on the skin. Make sure he's cleaning the skin regularly then apply the cream. He should probably see a dermatologist too since it sounds like it could be Seb derm.

Where does one come up with Melaleuca oil? This sounds interesting to me! I have been plagued with this since I was a teenager. It can be really bad with a bloody raw scalp. I have used the Nizoral shampoos (as well as OTC and a few other medicated shampoos) and steroid solutions and none have really helped so I just live with it It's hard b/c I have REALLY thick, coarse hair. It cannot be washed every day and it's really hard to get a product directly to my scalp because I literally have 10x the hair most people do .

Ugh, I am so sorry. Mine was so. Bad. When I lived in Oregon, it got all behind my ear and was a big bloody mess all the time. Ugh. It magically got better when I moved back to Utah. So, maybe move to a drier climate?? Haha. I had no idea melaleuca is the same as tea tree oil, but if you do want to give it a whirl just for fun, I get it from doterra, the add it to my shampoo (did you try that with the tea tree oil? It's the easiest way I have found to get it to my head). Good luck! I wish I had more advice!
