We found out over the wknd that SIL is expecting. It's the first niece/nephew for either of us and we are estatic. Do people give "congratulatory" expectant gifts? If so, what do you think is appropriate? I said to H either dinner together or mani/pedi with SIL; but is there something more useful you'd suggest?
It's a great guide to what's going on with your baby and your body, and provides explanations and precautions without resorting to scare tactics (gives side-eye to "What to Expect..."). It's my go-to gift to give when I need a congratulatory gift. Pair it with a mani or pedi gift card, or with the "Baby Bargains" book, and I think you'll be golden ;D
My best friend (who lives a state away) just announced her pregnancy so I put together a care package for them. I included a water bottle, some Tums, chewable ginger (it helps with nausea), nail polish, a kid's joke book (we like to text each other jokes so I said that was for the husband to provide entertainment in the delivery room), a few other random items and a bottle of local beer for her husband (they came up here for a brewery-related vacation a few years ago).
I think congratulation gifts are always nice (in the same week as I put together the baby package, I also put together a package for my other best friend who just left her husband and was excited). I like the book idea as well.
I like to give the book Baby Bargains. There is so much baby stuff the stores try to get you to buy and this book really helped me nail down what was necessary and needed.

We did mil and us created a pregnancy survival kit ...Kleenex, pads, Mac and cheese, clothing gift card, mom pops, cocoa butter, cream soda, you get the idea. Sil loved it. She was very concerned with miscarriage we didn't do too many things actually related to pregnancy though.
awesome thanks; off to amazon! (More advice or suggestion, keep it coming)
Loved this book and also the companion one that goes with it - Baby 411. There's a toddler 411 too, but I don't have that one yet of course.
I also have Pregnancy Week by Week and it's good - I like it better than What to Expect.
I also love the Burt's Bees mama bees lotion b/c it doesn't have the stink of cocoa butter. I've gone through one jar already and I'm onto my 2nd.
My H got some sort of pregnancy book for men that he thought was funny. It's packed so I couldn't tell you exactly, but the cover was green. It has little illlustrations like a Men's Health magazine or something.
I love giving pregnancy gifts too. I usually put together a little basket with 3-4 board books (these are often the first gift that the parents receive for the baby and the parents always get excited) and then some stretch mark lotion and snacks for the mama and I also usually include a $20 Pizza Hut gift card with a little note saying to use it for a night when the mama-to-be is just too tired to cook.
Friends of ours sent H The Baby Owners Manual (http://www.amazon.com/The-Baby-Owners-Manual-Instruction/dp/1931686238). He loved it. I think that might be what the other ladies were talking about.
I second the mama mio recommendation, their stuff is wonderful and something I would not have splurged on for myself with all of the baby-related things we needed.

Aw congrats You will love being an aunt!
When my sis found out she was pregnant with my nephew (I have 2 nephews and a niece), we went and got baby Tampa Bay Bucs stuff. That's my BIL's favorite team.
Ha future, I already have a Michigan State onsie on my radar since BIL went there. And thanks! I'm excited to be an aunt, especially since we live in the same city. I told H it'll be good baby practice for him, ha!
