We're selling our house today (thank goodness, because our real estate agent is an idiot). Our mortgage payment is always the first of the month (last Wed) and we paid it like always. The buyer's lawyer prepared their HUD on Friday and got it to us that afternoon. And the mortgage payoff info is from LAST MONTH. Our attorney is freaking out and saying that we shouldn't have made the payment, even though the payoff statement says to keep paying your mortgage.
So I'm just curious if most people have a mortgage payment due on the 1st or if they are random throughout the month.
OK, that's what I figured. My attorney was acting like I was an idiot for paying the mortgage. But we've known for MONTHS that closing was today. We've closed on homes before (both as buyer and seller) and neither stopped paying the mortgage. We'll get a refund, of course (eventually). But he was acting as if we were dumb for paying (even though paperwork they gave us says KEEP PAYING).

I hate real estate!
Don't feel dumb, and do get a new attorney next time if he is being a jerk. We also closed on the 5th (a couple of months ago) and paid our mortgage due the 1st of the month. They got an updated payoff the day of closing to make sure it was current.
