We moved DS to a different room and left his old room as a nursery - it was gender neutral and we will hopefully use it again soon.
In the new room, he has furniture I bought used from a Facebook group and my brother's old mattress. So it's a queen sized bed, full dresser, nightstand, plus a bookshelf, storage unit from Ikea with bins, adult-sized chair, and Anywhere Chair. It's a big room so it doesn't seem too crowded. We got the bedding and curtains from PBK and are really happy with them. He has a few shelves with knickknacks on the walls and some "bigger boy" art - prints of a tugboat, airplane, etc. that we found at a resale store. The walls are cream since we painted before we found bedding. I'll see if I can remember to PIP later.
We read books together in bed, but when he was in the converted crib, we would just sit on the open place where no bar is and read like that.
I'm still not sure I know what a "nursery" is supposed to look like. The only changes we made to DD's room were going from a crib to a bed and taking the changing pad off of the dresser. Now, we moved that same dresser into DS's room and put the changing pad back on. Also moved the crib into his room and moved the rocking chair from DD's room to his, thus leaving DD more floor space to play with all of her American Girl stuff.

This is what we did when we moved:
We had converted DS' crib to a toddler bed at our old apartment (when he outgrows that, we'll get a twin). We took the long bureau that we had been using as a changing table out of his room, and condensed all of his clothes and sheets and towels into his tall 5-drawer chest.
We also added a small toddler-sized red table from Ikea, and put his Uglywhere chair next to it. We leave a small stack of books on it, so if he's not tired during "naptime," he can sit in his armchair and read.
We plan to add a bookshelf (either stand-alone piece, or hang shelves for books -- cover-facing-outward style).
ETA: The living room in our new apartment is a decent size, so we divided it in half, with half being the actual living room with our couch and TV and end tables and a shelving unit for our books; and the other half is his play area, with a big shelving unit for his books, his easel, his wooden tracks and trains, and his cars.

They share a room. They have gigantic bunk beds. Full over full. Furniture stayed the same otherwise. They have 2 dressers and a small table and chairs in there. Most toys are kept in the living room so the only ones in there are ones they've dragged out that need to be put away.
What are your favorite furniture places? I love the Jenny Lind bed from Land Of Nod, but don't want to pay the $$$$ for it. How are metal beds? I just imagine them constantly making noise. I love the Catalina PBK bed, but wouldn't mind finding a cheaper version as well.
I have no idea if we should do a twin bed or a full. DD rocks her toddler bed (crib conversion). I would love to not bring the crib with us when we move, and move her directly into a big girl bed when we move into the new house.

We switched rooms so that we don't have to do much to the nursery. The only toys are stuffed animals, books & puzzles. He has never played in his room much. We went from the crib to a full and he's done great with it.

So.many.questions.
Target now carries a Jenny Lind bed frame that seems reasonably priced and I've heard good things about it.
DDs room is pretty small so we really can't do a full size bed.

oooh thank you! I really like it (and especially the price!). I'm not crazy about footboards so i think this might be better.
Dumb question, but would this then just fit to a plain metal bed frame?

All we did was swap out the crib for a twin bed, and swap out the baby dresser/changing pad for a nice dresser. It's a good quality dresser- not kid furniture. I like it better than my dresser, but we are not ever redoing our furniture, at least not until the kids are grown.
It's just a twin mattress on a metal frame as well. Couldn't decide on a fancy frame or headboard, but we can always figure it out in the future.
Went to Target. Showed DD the bedding aisle, and boom. Done.

We moved DD into another bedroom when we were done with the crib mattress on the floor and while we were prepping the nursery for DS. We built her bed (full). It has storage cubbies underneath it on all three sides. On the other wall she has an IKEA 4 drawer malm dresser, an art easel, and a princess vanity. The wall with the door has her closet, stuffed animal storage & the bookshelf. It's definitely not my favorite theme but it makes her happy and the color (Behr: Frosted Jade) should carry for at least a few more remodels. It shifts from blue to gray to green depending on the light. Pictures are from last spring. Her room is a mess post-Christmas.
