My husband is big on "safe sleep" so he was opposed to the RnP and the PnP newborn napper. My son sleeps in the bassinet level of the PnP, which is pulled right next to my side of the bed.
I'm like your husband. Chances are nothing will happen, but you just never know and it's not worth the risk. If he's in the RNP or swing, I am in the same room and awake. He's been fine sleeping in the PNP from birth thankfully.
My mom is watching him when I go back to work, so she has a PNP at their house. She put a quilted comforter over the PNP bassinet pad because she thought it was too hard I had to explain why it was a SIDS risk-so much has changed since we were babies!

Arms reach co sleeper for both, although, DS is in a PNP now because we just have the mini co sleeper, and he's a giant, but I'm not ready to put him in his own room yet.
I also was too nervous about SIDS to use the newborn napper on the PNP or get a RNP. However, I did let them both nap in the swing and bouncy chair during the day when I was on ML.
DS was a NICU baby for the 1st 3 weeks, so he was in a crib from the start. Once he was home, I attempted a bassinet in our room. He hated that thing with the fire of 1000 suns. SCREAMED bloody murder in there. Moved him to his own room/crib and he was fine. Solved that issue fairly quickly. He was right outside our bedroom so he was fine.

A started in a bassinet for the first 6 weeks or so, then moved to the bassinet insert of the PnP until 3 months. She started moving around too much and kept waking herself up, so we moved her into the crib then, cold turkey.
Our original plan was just the PnP until the crib, but we were given the bassinet, so why not use it?
Both of my babies slept in an Arms Reach Co-sleeper in our room for the first 4 months before we transferred them to a crib around the time each started rolling.
I just saw my first RnP IRL last week at a friend's place!

DS slept in his swing for about 2 weeks, then moved to the bassinet insert of his pack-n-play (and to the bottom of his PNP when he outgrew the bassinet weight limit), then transitioned to his crib around 5.5 months old.
We had a bassinet (Arm's Reach mini-cosleeper that was set up freestanding) in our room. That never got used. She slept in someone's arms in the recliner in the nursery or on DH's chest in our bed for the first week. Then she slept in the swing. In the living room. We all slept much better like that. It lasted 2 weeks, until DH left out of town then I moved the swing into our room. She slept either there or in her bouncer by my bed (it's the FP infant to toddler rocker that is shaped exactly like the RNP) for 3 more weeks. Then she stopped sleeping in the bouncer and we reverted back to the swing. By this time we moved the swing to the nursery and she spent about 6 weeks to 4.5 months sleeping in her swing. Then we moved her to the crib after traveling OOT and her sleeping great in a regular PNP. She only went back to the swing for naps after that.
co-sleeper next to our bed, but as soon as we'd put him in it, he'd wake up and cry, so we really ended up co-sleeping. We just changed our bedding and i put him on my side of the bed since I was so conscious of him. I put him in the crook of my arm so I couldn't possibly roll over on him and it was great once we learned how to side lay nurse. Then I didn't even have to wake up to nurse him. He'd just start rooting and I'd flop my boob closer to him and he'd latch. Anyhow, later, he moved into his crib. For naps, he slept wherever at first. We had a couple of those bouncy chairs that he loved, and then a couple months in, I'd take him to the crib or the swing in his nursery for naps. By 6 months, he was napping 90% of the time in his crib.
It may depend a bit on your baby. My first loved the newborn napper on the pack n play and slept there next to me in a recliner (after my c-section I couldn't sleep in a bed for a couple of weeks). Then we moved her to a hand me down bassinet in her own room, it had a vibrating feature on it that she loved.
We started my son in the bassinet in his own room (he hated the vibrating feature so we never used it). I just put video monitors on them and it worked fine. We tried DD in our room for one night and it was very disruptive to all 3 of us. Our house is small enough that I never minded shuffling down the hall to nurse.

DS: PNP in our room for two weeks. We then moved him to his room in the crib for two weeks. His reflux got bad at 1 month, so he was in the RNP in his room until 4 months. After 4 months all nighttime sleep was in the crib.
He napped in his swing in his room until 6 or 7 months.
DD: currently 2.5 weeks old. She's in our room. She was in the co sleeper but her reflux can't tolerate a flat surface either. So now she's in the RNP by the bed. I just ordered a boppy nest for cosleeping in the bed, so we'll see if that's inclined enough. I anticipate her being in our room for awhile. I am tired and don't want to move any more than I have to for motn wakings, lol.
My poor children (at least a couple) were born before the invention of the RNP. Somehow they managed to survive in the bassinet part of the pack n play next to my side of the bed.
