So apparently 8/16 kids in C's class have been diagnosed with pneumonia. First of all, I didn't think pneumonia was contagious--am I wrong? I thought it was kind of a secondary symptom of an infection or something.
Second: apparently parents are sending their kids to school with it. They don't violate the fever or vomiting rules so technically it's okay. (This all came to light due to FB posts and parents being friends with each other.) But if it's so contagious, would you expect DC to act somehow? Right now they just have a sign up warning parents about it.
Two kids in E's class had pneumonia last week. Apparently one was bacterial, one viral. I do not know enough about it, either, but I would assume the viral version is contagious. Those kids were out of "school" until they were better. Because the thing about pneumonia is you need lots of rest to recover, and playing at daycare doesn't really accomplish that. It wipes people out. I would think they'd be barred from the center assuming yours has an "ability to participate" requirement for kids to attend. Ours has the standard fever, vomiting, diarrhea rules, but also if a kid is "unable to participate" in typical activities due to illness, they can/should be sent home.

The whole thing is so weird and confusing.
Per WebMD it is contagious "If your pneumonia is caused by a virus or bacteria, you may spread the infection to other people while you are contagious. How long you are contagious depends on what is causing the pneumonia and whether you get treatment. You may be contagious for several days to a week. If you get antibiotics, you usually cannot spread the infection to others after a day of treatment."
So, I guess if these kids are on antibiotics they may not be contagious, but I would think they needs rest like PP said and probably shouldn't be at school anyways.
Viral pneumonia can be contagious I believe. Bacterial not so much.
Edit: I see that I am wrong about the above.
I guess if a kid was on the tail end of the infection and feeling fine then I don't see any worry with them going to daycare.
When I was a child I had pneumonia 2-3x a year and was hospitalized for it as well. I never went to school with it but I also always had a fever and was feeling so sick, and by the end of the infection I was so weak from not moving around and from being bedridden.
