I have some really good yarn that I picked up at a garage sale (yes, I realize this makes me sound like I'm 80). The problem with the yarn is that apparently it sat out in a garage or something and got all dusty. They must have beat/brushed off the obvious dust to sell it, but the dust is also imbedded in the fibers.
I'm having a hard time working with it because the pollen, et al is irritating my skin.
What can I do? I've thought about washing the skein in a pillow case, etc. but I'm worried it would snarl.
I'd unravel the skein, and make hanks with it (like, hold it in your hand, wrap it around the bottom of your elbow and back to your hand). Tie it off. Wash it by hand in a sink, then either hang it by the hank or lay it flat to dry.

this seems like the best plan to me. Of course I like to use my husband when i'm doing anything that involves winding or unwinding skeins. He's good for that.

Thats what I would do. Be sure to keep the temp cool & not agitate it too much if its wool to prevent premature felting.
