My daughter started drops for pink eye Tuesday night. When I picked her up from daycare today she had lots of greenish yellow discharge but her eyes were significantly less pink than yesterday. Her mood was fine. She went down for a nap for 45 minutes and when she woke up she was crying and rubbing her eyes and wouldn't open them for long. And then, she just wouldn't open them at all. I gave her the last dose of drops for the day but that didn't seem to calm her down. Can she be experiencing pain two days into the drops? Is there anything I can give her?
I suppose she could be, but I don't think she should be. Those drops usually work well, almost immediately. I'd give the pedi a call to see if you should take her back in tomorrow.
In the meantime, I'd give Motrin/Tylenol if she's uncomfortable.
I suppose if it is viral pink eye the drops wouldn't help at all. Is it possible she has a reaction to the drops/ the drops are irritating her eyes? Does she have a fever?
We had a nasty case of viral pink eye last month. Lasted two weeks and got worse at one point (he wouldn't even open his eye). We ended up getting cortisone/antibacterial drops that helped reduce swelling and take care of a secondary infection that had developed. But the round of plain antibacterial drops at the start didn't have any effect.

After she fell back asleep for 30 minutes last night she was in a better mood. I'm hoping she was just really tired and that when she wakes up this morning her eyes look better! Thanks for the advice. Good to know the drops may not be enough!
In addition to viral, pink eye can be related to allergies too.
In good news, if it's either of those, it's way less contagious. In bad news, there's nothing you can do to speed it up really.
I had pink eye once in my life, at age 29. It was viral and lasted 10 days. My GP said the same bugs that cause colds can cause them and said mine was probably spurred on by a nasty cold I had right before that.
