Because they are like the book version of Willy Wonka. I was terrified of the Willy Wonka movie when I was a kid. Seuss books were full of similar weirdness to me. Though when I was in 7th grade I think, the 8th graders did a rendition of "Green Eggs and Ham" and surprisingly I liked that story and their "play."
DD acquired a copy of "One Fish, Two Fish" at a birthday party recently. I sat down to read it to her. After like the 28th page, I didn't understand why the book had not ended 18 pages ago and I was not about to read 28 more pages. DD was long gone from story time by then. I thought it was going to be like a 10 page book about fish. Nope. Seuss book fail.

Dr. Seuss can suck a nut. I read his books and I'm like, "What?" Why are you so goddamn long? Dude. For real, put down the bong. Fox is Sox is MH's bane. It causes him such mental pain. We read two books before bed. Two Dr. Seuss? Just kill me dead. Purple nurple flibbity flide. All of your books I want to hide.
Seriously. Gag. I have it taped closed because it makes me want to barf.
So is it too young to buy for my almost 4 year olds? They would LOVE to make DH read it to them and scare him with the spider (they picked out a remote control spider for his Christmas present, it was awesome).

it's actually way too old for my 18 month old - it's all lift the flaps with info about specific animals from around the world. I can take pictures if you would like!

We love Seuss. We have a Latin version of Green Eggs and Ham that's pretty amazing too. Semper ova tua spernum. Viret ova, virent perna! Lol.
We have the Spanish version and both of my children have loved the sound of the rhymes practically since birth. Sam I Am is "Juan Ramón," rhymes with "huevos verdes con jamón." Green Eggs & Ham 4 Lyfe!
I'm neutral on this. Hate the cat in the hat, although it did make for an awesome theme party in college. The Sneetches is one of my favorite children's book. His adult book, I can't remember the name, but the cover is black,it is weird as hell. I believe he was depressed when he wrote it. Oh the places you will go needs to stop. I loved it before it became a graduation and baby shower cliche. I get that it was the commencement speech at Dartmouth, originally, but it's too played out.
I hate the Cat in the Hat. I don't like the message.
I LOVE the Sneetches. It is also one of my top 5 children's books.

I never even cared for them as a kid. The illustrations were awful, and the pages upon pages of non-sensical words... Huh. I was a pretty serious, cut-to-the-chase kind of kid, though.
We love Seuss at our house. We only read one book a night. So even if Green Eggs and Ham and Cat in the Hat are both longer than 50 pages, we don't mind. It still takes about 8 minutes to read, it's not that taxing. For Christmas, DS got a game called "Cat in the Hat, I can Do That!" or something. He loves the game, and it's much more fun for adults (at least this adult) than Chutes and Ladders, Candyland type games.
I love Seuss. I am a big fan of both imagination and progressive politics, so children's books full of made up words and crazy drawings with messages about environmentalism and racism are good with me. On the other hand, I hate Sandra Boynton, and I seem to be alone on that.
On a related note, the Seuss land at Universal Islands of Adventure is super cute and good for little ones if any one dares to venture over from the beloved WDW.
another Seuss fan here. I don't get all the hate. I love the rhyming and find that, unless it's a book like The Lorax, The birthday book or the Sleep Book, that they go fairly fast.
DS1 even shares a birthday with Seuss (Mar 2) so he had a Seuss-themed party last year

I was going to mention my general dislike of Boynton, as well! I'm OK with a few of them, but most have horrible rhythm and the illustrations are ugly, so they've been donated.
