I know, I know. We've done this. But please recommend your not-too-big play kitchen. I was firmly in the no play kitchen camp but she loves them so much I think I'm caving for her 2nd birthday.
We got a small entertainment center in CL, sanded it, painted it, added a cutoff for an over (plexiglass) and sick. Sink was dollar store brownee pad, faucet was cheap version on clearance at home deport. Added a small undersink curtain, stove was painted wood circles at craft store. Added handles for fridge and over,
I have an ugly plastic one. I see them on Craigslist all the time. My kids love it, and I got it for free from a former coworker, so that's your MM option
When I was at Sam's last week they had clearanced the kidkraft kitchen they were carrying for Christmas. It was super cute and I want to say it was in the $60 range. Might be worth checking out?
I have gotten 2 different Step 2 kitchens for my niece and nephew. They have lots of different sizes.
They were less expensive than the Kid Kraft ones and much, much easier to put together. They have a lot more features too like phones to play with and stoves that light up. Some of the Kid Kraft ones are really short too, so be wary of that--they may not work for kids for as long.

We have a ridiculous hippy dippy play kitchen. It is made from ash that came from trees killed by ash borers. The company no longer makes this specific model. I was convinced that we needed a real wood, USA made kitchen. I am not sure why I was so adament about it. link
DD got this for Christmas, she loves it! I wouldn't have paid full price, i bought it last January on clearance as a floor model. It was in great condition for $150 or so. It's adorable. I know they have alot of things are clearance right now so it might be worth checking out if you have a local store.
