Who do you have your E and wedding ring insured through? I just got mine appraised and need to decide if I want to add a rider on my homeowners or use an independent insurance company. Thank you!!
no insurance. I dropped it down the drain within the first week that H gave it to me, but luckily he was able to retrieve it just beyond the trap. Oh my goodness I was so freaked out. That was the only close call I've had.

We have my engagement ring independently insured through Jewelers Mutual. My wedding band wasn't super, super expensive so we don't have it insured through a separate policy- it's included as part of our normal homeowners policy.
It isn't separately insured. If I had a loss, my e-ring/wedding band/anniversary band would be covered under our regular homeowners' policy, but the $1k deductible would apply. I don't have a jewelry rider to eliminate the deductible for jewelry losses.

Thanks everyone! I just looked at my current homeowners coverage and it only covers up to a 2500 loss and would cover my wedding ring so guess I will only need to insure my e ring.

I don't know the value of your ring and/or your total jewelry but please make sure you double check your policy because a lot of homeowner's policies have a dollar limit to what they will pay for jewelry and usually it's not very much.

I know it will vary, but do you have a ballpark or where it becomes an issue? And is it per item or aggregate? Most of my jewelry isn't worth all that much, but I have a lot of it.
I keep thinking I need to look into our insurance more carefully to make sure that things like my handbags are covered, but I just can't bring myself to read the policies.
I can just say to look at your policy or call and ask. Some policies put a limit of say $1,000 or $2,500 for the loss of jewelry. Some people get confused and think it's up to $1k or 2500 per item but usually it's per occurance.
Edit: so I just reviewed my policy and the max is $1,000 for loss by theft for jewelry, watches, furs and previous and semi-previous stones.
We have ours with USAA who also insures our vehicles.
Similar -I thought it was a line home owners insurance with USAA. They do all of our insurances. But I just checked and it's a separate insurance - "valuable personal property". I think it's something like $35 a year.
Now that we have a home and homeowner's insurance, I may look into a rider when our current policy expires. It will depend on their terms, as pp have discussed.

This is us too. Personal property - personal articles - something like that.
We have a rider on our homeowner's insurance. I used to have Jewelers Mutual and they were awesome when I had to make a claim. My diamond in my ring cracked and I was able to get a full replacement without issue.
My wedding band is covered by our regular policy...it slightly exceeds the maximum allowable for jewelry, but not by enough that it was worth adding a rider. More economical to just absort that hit should it get lost/stolen/damaged. The value of my ering is over what is allowed for a rider, so it's actually insured under it's own separate policy with the same company.
We were renting when we got engaged. I called Allstate because my car insurance is through them, and they gave me a renter's policy to cover my e-ring.
When we bought our house, we again insured it through Allstate. A few weeks later I emailed my rep to ask on a whim if my e-ring was covered, since I thought they'd just transfer it over from my renter's policy ... turns out it wasn't, so I just had to ask them to add it. If it had been more than three years since I first insured it, I would've had to have it re-appraised.
Our wedding rings cost $200 each so it's not worth it to have them insured.

OP- I forgot to put this in my original response.
When you are shopping for insurance make sure it covers: theft, loss, damage & mysterious disappearance.
Also check to see how they replace/repair. Is it from a jeweler of their choice or yours. We spent a lot of time shopping the first time around so it was important to us that we could go back to our preferred jeweler if needed.
