That is weird. I've only heard of that if it's, for instance, 2 people ordering drinks for 4 people. Then it would make sense for them to request 4 IDs.
I would be kinda pissed about this and probably not go back or not order from that bartender again.

A bartender at PF Chang's did this to my dad and H when they tried to buy drinks for my mom and me. I've never experienced it anywhere else or ever again. My dad's a bartender and was like "Umm... What?"

I've heard of it when people order more than one per person - or when they say it's for someone else. Which is annoying but understanding.
But- so annoyed that they denied them a drink of one per person for themselves. Enough to complain to the owner, who I kinda know. Ok, I really just have a secret crush on him.
I guess that makes sense, but I've never had it happen before either, so I think it's weird. lol
If you're ordering more than one drink per person maybe? But not a drink each for 2 people and you guys already have drinks. Who gives a fuck where they're sitting? Um...entire bar of people..if you know the person ordering the drink, please show your ID too for the drink you already have. Wtf!?
I've been carded for sitting at a table with someone ordering a drink, even after I ordered my Coke. Some places are weirdly paranoid about drink sharing.
I have had that happen before because they don't know if they are going to buy the drink and then pass it off. Eh, annoying but he was just doing his job (though he should not have gotten douchy).
Its a recent thing. I went to the store with my BFF and her kids a while ago and she bought a couple bottles of wine. The checker asked to see MY license as well since I was with her and she was buying booze.
That is weird and annoying but presumably their place their rules and it isn't that hard to bring out your license. I still think it is bizarre.
Eons ago when my dh had just moved here he took me out for my 22nd birthday. He was 23 at the time. We drove 45 minutes to a specific restaurant and they refused to serve him bc his out of state I'd "looked fake." It was not. That was very annoying.
That's weird to me. We require ID for each drink being ordered, so if it's just one person and they order two drinks, we ask for the second ID. We've never asked to see the ID of someone else in the party if the person is just ordering one drink.
That said, we do get people who will order drinks and pass them to someone else we haven't ID'ed, so I can see why a bar might do it. Sounds like he had a bad attitude though.

It's not weird to be paranoid about this. If one of my servers doesn't card and we get caught, as the manager on duty, I can be personally fined thousands of dollars and arrested. You can bet I take that shit pretty seriously.
My DH (then bf) and I went to the Boston Garden to see a concert. We order 2beers they card us both and they would not give me my beer because I was 24 and with and out of state (Rhode Island) ID. DH then went to get me a beer somewhere else and like 10 minutes later the security officer took my beer. I was so pissed. I was iver 21 by a couple years, had a valid ID, had credit cards all with my name on it and my ID was from the state next door. Thankfully it was one of my top five shows so I got over it.
Last time I went to the liquor store the guy asked for my ID but I had left my purse at home. I told him that and he shrugged. Then I handed him my H's debit card and he looked at me, then the card, then ran it through.
New York is such a different world. I feel like you have to be pre-pubescent to be carded here- unless it's an everyone is carded at the door situation.
It could be that bartender has been caught serving underage before. A friend of mine got burned twice in one year and almost couldn't bartend anymore. And he works behind the bar at a restaurant, not just a bar. Bars here typically require ID at the door.
Also, most airport bars card EVERYONE - doesn't matter if they're 21 or 71.
When I was under-21, I went to a bar with some friends that were all of age. We walked in together and everyone went to the bar and ordered a drink except me, one of the other people brought me a water from the bar. The bartender came around and asked for my ID before I'd even had a sip of the water. Since I wasn't 21, I got kicked out and everyone ended up leaving with me. Super embarrassing at the time, but that's the law for us.

This happens somewhat frequently when DH and I buy booze together at the grocery store, it's annoying but I get why they do it.
This happens every single time we buy beer at the grocery store. I've had to go and sit in the car before while DH checks out because I didn't remember to bring my license, and I know they won't sell to us if one of us doesn't have ID.

MA can be such a pain about this. I always worried about this when I went to Bruins games and wanted to order a beer.
When I bartended I had to ID everyone just to make sure they actually had their ID on them, even if they were obviously of age. But that was only if they were ordering a drink. I wouldn't ID someone who ordered a tea or water. I can't remember if I used to ID people who ordered two drinks - I feel like we had to.
