Gay marriage activists are planning to swarm Starbucks on Tuesday in an attempt to counter the record sales from last week’s Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.
The chicken chain enjoyed a surge of support during the Wednesday event, dreamed up by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee after Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy went on the record backing the “biblical definition of the family unit.”
A follow-up protest from Chick-fil-A critics on Friday, which was dubbed Same Sex Kiss Day, was more subdued.
Advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights are trying again Tuesday with National Marriage Equality Day, initiated by Equally Wed, a lesbian and gay wedding magazine. So far, nearly 28,000 people have signed up to attend.
The event was originally called National Starbucks Appreciation Day in honor of the coffee giant, which recently threw its support behind efforts to make gay marriage legal.
But several other holidays exist with the same name, including one created by gun rights groups. Starbucks’ corporate offices had nothing to do with those events nor with Tuesday’s planned gatherings.
According to Equally Wed, executives at the coffee chain had privately pushed organizers to include other companies that support same-sex unions -- such as Amazon.com and Nike.
“In an effort to heighten awareness for all companies and nonprofits contributing to the fight for marriage equality, we’ve decided to rename August 7 as National Marriage Equality Day,” according a description of the event on Facebook.
The page also lists dozens of other brands in the same camp, including Absolut Vodka, Google, Macy’s and Tiffany & Co.

When will it stop?
I mean feeding the wrong machine? Wouldn't our money be more prudently used going directly to an LGBT organization, supporting Starbux only makes Starbux stronger doesn't it?

copz, it doesn't have to be one or the other. It's definitely more effective to give your $7 to a pro-LGBTQ org directly. But you can do that and still stand up with an enormous international retailer that says, "we support this." There are also LOTS of people who will go to Sbux today who will not give right to those orgs because they don't know how, are too lazy or don't have the resources to make a sizeable donation. So while this is no doubt a form of slacktivism, I don't see anything wrong with supporting a business that will redirect some of my money in the right direction instead of a direction I fundamentally disagree with. Voting with your dollars and all that.
I went, and I have two observations: 1) there was zero line, which was weird this time of morning, and 2) they don't sell cake pops in the morning apparently. Those gay-loving bastards.
After looking at all of the smug faces showing off their CFA, I will go to Starbucks today so that the possible uptick in sales (not just from mine) will show support for gay people.
If you didn't see Colbert last night, you must see his answer to the whole CFA thing. It was tongue-in-cheek and addressed what other hateful things people could use as ads--"Lazy Boy Recliners for Mexicans, because they are lazy." He and Stewart can hit people harder with comedy than serious pundits.

Did my part (mmmmm, Caramel Macchiato). But, the store I went to was out of croissants :-( , so I'm forced to go to another for lunch to get my croissant fix. And another beverage. ;D
It would have been helpful for this to get the same promotional effort on FB as the CFA movement. Especially the day before, because well, I'm caffeinated now.
M might just get a strawberries and cream on her way home from swim practice though for doing a super good amazing job in her side breathing technique.
