I had two very strange book-related experiences during my recent vacation.
The first occurred while I was in line waiting to board the bus to the airport and heard a group of Australian university students discussing Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. They were looking at the map in the front of the book and were convinced that Kentucky is a coastal state and that it is totally possible to see the ocean from mountaintops in Kentucky.
The second was an overheard conversation at City Lights bookstore in San Francisco. A couple of friends were talking about books and the first was holding a copy of William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and said "Hemingway, he's the Crime and Punishment guy." Her friend tapped the book the first was holding and agreed "Yeah, he's great, isn't he?"
On both occasions it was all I could do not to laugh out loud. Just wanted to share with people who might find the experiences as funny as I did.
