I started a major closet cleaning adventure yesterday. I felt like it was suffocating and the measley little cleaning out I do once a month wasn't cutting it. I have a hard time letting go and am definitely one of those people who keeps things because I "might need it one day." Also, I like variety, so I hang onto things longer to give my wardrobe more depth (although, pretty sure that's the wrong way of doing that).
Yesterday I made it through my shirts/blouses and skirts. I took out my skirt section and had FIFTY skirts. Yes, 50. I used to work in an enviornment where I wore them often. Now, they only see the light of day at church.
So with my secret out, that I'm an apparent hoarder and need help, make me feel better here:
How many of each piece do you think you own: 1. Skirts 2. Dresses 3. Slacks 4. Jeans 5. Blouses 6. Sweaters 7. Shoes 8. Accessories
Feel free to add anything I left out and give any pointers on closet cleaning. I loved the one posted the other day about the yes, no, maybe piles. It helped tons. Except the next day I looked at the maybe pile and second guessed myself. It's an ugly cycle.
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be! 1. Skirts- maybe 35 now 2. Dresses- probably the same as skirts, haven't sifted through yet 3. Slacks-5? 4. Jeans-12, guessing 5. Blouses- 20, tees-20? 6. Sweaters-? 7. Shoes-60? 8. Accessories scarves-15, necklaces-30?
I'm a nerd and since I'm home, I'll go upstairs to count.
1. Skirts - 15 - Casual 4, Work 11 2. Dresses - 39 - Casual 18, Work 15, Special Occasion 6 3. Slacks - 7 - Casual 5, Work 2 4. Jeans - 6 5. Blouses - 55 - Casual 20, Work 35 6. Sweaters - 57 7. Shoes - 34 - Casual 24, Work 10 8. Accessories - too varied to count
And I'm a ruthless purger, so all of this is current stuff that I wear. I did spy a couple sweaters that need to be given to someone with a smaller bust than I, but I left those out of the count. I didn't include t-shirts in the blouses count, did you want those? Like tees from Loft? I have 27 of those.
1. Skirts - 15ish 2. Dresses - 30ish 3. Slacks - 10 4. Jeans - 5 5. Blouses - 100?? 6. Sweaters - 15 7. Shoes - 50 8. Accessories - way too many I would guess at least 25 necklaces and 50 bracelets but again these are all made up numbers.
- You know about the "if you haven't worn it in a year" rule? It goes if you haven't worn it in that long.
- To help you with your "maybe" pile problem, pack up all those clothes and put them out of sight - an attic or storage unit. If you don't reach for anything in there during its season, you know you can safely get rid of it.
For some people, they have so much because they don't know what they have. Is that you? Try better organizing your space. I'm just a leettle compulsive with my closet: to the left of the door is everything casual: on the top rack, shirts are hung by sleeve length, then by rainbow order, all on the same type of hanger; on the bottom rack, bottoms are hung by length (skirts first, then pants), then in rainbow order, all on the same type of hanger. To the right of the door is everything for work organized in the same way.
Oh, and I have 7 suits I didn't list above. Apparently I'm a clotheshorse.

1. Skirts: 10
2. Dresses: Around 15-20
3. Slacks: 7
4. Jeans: 6
5. Blouses: 8 maybe?
6. Sweaters: 4 or 5
7. Shoes: Probably like 40
8. Accessories/other: I have about 7 blazers and 7 cardigans/cover ups so that makes up for my lack of blouses and sweaters. I tend to wear tanks under them pretty often. I'm not a huge belt person so I only have 2 skinny ones and 4 thick ones. I think I only have about 5 scarves so far.
I feel like I hardly have anything compared to most of ya'll! But I still feel like all I do is spend money on clothes and shouldn't I tend to go through my closet a lot though and get rid of stuff I don't wear anymore.

These are just guesses:
1. Skirts 15 2. Dresses 25 3. Slacks 10 4. Jeans 8 5. Blouses 8 6. Sweaters 20 7. Shoes 30-40 8. Accessories Not sure, but I am overflowing my necklace tree
The problem is I usually wear the same stuff all the time, and when I do take out a seldomly used piece, I fall in love with it all over again. Also, it's way too hot here for jeans and sweaters most of the year, so I would say I only get a few months out of my jeans, and the only time I wear sweaters is when I go up north for Christmas.

Absolutely! Thanks for some great tips and please come help me. ha! There's a part of me who wants badly to be an organizer and the bigger part of me attempts and fails miserably. I can already tell from cleaning out my skirts and shirts, that I can make better use of what I have. I also tend to get tired of the same things over and over. I have a problem.
Some of you people have very little clothing! I don't know how either because I rarely see things repeated in OOTD. ;D I'm hoping to cut down and become a smarter shopper as a result of this overhaul. I would love to only have pieces in there that I actually make use of, I think.. I suppose this is a good start.

All numbers end in "ish" 1. Skirts- 15-20 2. Dresses- 10 3. Slacks-30 4. Jeans-30+ I looove jeans and would wear them daily 5. Blouses- 50? 6. Sweaters- 40? 7. Shoes-60 8. Accessories scarves-not many- 5 or so.
ETA- I have a large walk-in closet. While I could and should pare-down, it isn't hard to find anything in there.
It's harder to visualize now that I've changed to a shelving unit instead of hanging things but I'll try:
How many of each piece do you think you own: 1. Skirts - 10 (but only a few of those are actually worn) 2. Dresses - 15-20 3. Slacks - 5 (I don't wear slacks for work anymore and mostly keep them on hand in case of an interview or occasion for real formal wear) 4. Jeans - 5 or 6, not including jean shorts 5. Blouses - 5, but if we are including more t-shirt material than it's probably 30 or so 6. Sweaters - 25 7. Shoes - 15-20 8. Accessories - 60
