Long story short: I got a GI diagnosis today. It's not just IBS. I have gastroparesis.
Long story not so short: My previous GI specialist had me do a four hour stomach emptying study last summer. Normally these are done by eating a meal that includes eggs, but I'm allergic to eggs and she assured me that I could eat oatmeal instead. After the test, she called me and said that it was inconclusive because they couldn't trust any results if you didn't eat the egg meal. I was really upset and ever went back to see her.
Fast forward to today. My new GI was finally able to get all of my records from the old one (they didn't include the emptying study in the records they sent before my last appointment) and was able to review it. IT WASN'T INCONCLUSIVE. IT WAS CLEARLY IRREGULAR, EGGS OR NO EGGS.
Sorry about the post and run! Work has been crazy today so I haven't had any down time to check back in.
There's no cure because it's a chronic condition, but there are ways to treat the symptoms. Basically, my stomach isn't able to properly process food and keep it moving through my system like it's supposed to.
She's referring me to a nutritionist because I'm going to have to make some pretty drastic diet changes, and then we're going to work on adding supplements/medications for additional relief once I'm on a gastroparesis friendly diet.
I came straight to work from my appointment, and I can't wait to go home and research the heck out of diet tips so that I can start menu planning.
