As a reminder, this is what we were getting rid of:
And we bought this instead:
(I'm aware that the blanket and pillows are different shades of red, but I'm not sure I care.) No joke - DH is in LOVE with this thing. It's a dual recliner and those are sectional pieces, so we can take out the console if we have guests to make a 3-person sofa. Also the console has dual cupholders, a remote holder thing, and the back lifts up to reveal electrical and USB plugs so that he can work in comfort. Yes, it's ugly, but we got a spectacular deal on it and it's ridiculously comfortable. If we ever buy a house it'll go into the family/movie room. LOL
And we decided not to get rid of the old loveseat, but instead cram it into our tiny living room in front of the picture window. So it's become this:

Yep! It was such a fantastic deal that I literally couldn't come up with a reason NOT to buy it. (It was in the clearance center due to an upholstery smudge. The whole thing was marked down from $1800+ to $550.) Yes, the upholstery is hideous, I won't deny that - it reminds me of a mid-80's dodge caravan, honestly. But H is in love and who am I to deny the man a comfy tv-watching throne? LOL
LOL - my mom had an 80s caravan! The couch isn't so terrible and it definitely looks comfy. One of the reasons I wanted a separate family room and living room was so that I could put really comfy, functional furniture in the family room and not be totally obsessed with it looking perfect =).
It looks so comfy! DH and I tend to go for comfy over looks when it comes to furniture, too.
I don't think that you have to give up looks to have comfort. If I have to look at something every day I need to like everything about it....otherwise I will wind up only seeing what I don't like and it will drive me crazy.

Honestly, I will admit ... we have sat upon a LOT of sofas in the last several months. A LOT. Probably several hundred. And in the under $1k price point we were going for, this is the first one we've both liked. Since I'm short with even shorter legs and DH is tall with long legs, it's hard to find a sofa that both makes H comfortable and doesn't make me look like a little kid with my legs sticking straight out. Sofas these days are so freaking DEEP. Or too long, or too squishy, or whatever. I wish we'd had the time/money to invest in a custom one with upholstery I love, but given that we needed something in a hurry and this met everything but the "beautiful" qualification, I'll settle.
When/if we buy a house, I'll put some time and money into getting a beautiful sofa that will be both decorative and comfy. Until then, I'm happy that H is happy.
We have one similiar to this and my husband LOVES LOVES LOVES it! Did I mention he is in love with it? We got the matching sofa with it. It's so versatile and comfy. I know you will love yours too. Sounds like you already do!
