North Indian midrange: Bombay Brasserie (either rice village or near galleria) and India's (Richmond Ave, just west of Galleria) are usually pretty solid (not mind blowing, but reasonably good). ETA- I'd put Khyber in this group too. My favorite is Tandoori Garden in Katy but that's a far west suburb.
North Indian higher price range: Kiran's is really great and I recommend if you don't mind spending a bit more. I've heard great things about Pondicheri, especially for breakfast (the thalis are supposed to be excellent), and hope to check it out soon myself! I also like Indika for something a bit different (same owner as Pondicheri, but Indika is older).
South Indian: Balaji's Bhavan on Hillcroft is the best dosa house by far.
Biriyani: Himalaya on Hillcroft. Warning- the guy running the show is a bit rough but the biriyani is solid.
Snacks and sweets: Raja's on Hillcroft. Snacks are great, chai is yummy and the sweets (mithai) are really yummy.
I'm bumping this because I leave for Houston in a few days. Anyone have museums/activities they love to do with kids? We'll be with two 6-year-olds, two 4-year-olds and two babies (although one of them may be walking already, I think).
The Children's Museum is a lot of fun, and should be perfect for that age group. It's on the southern edge of downtown, in the Museum District.
Definitely. We started going with DS when he was 3 months old. The parents may need to split up though, as the tot spot won't allow kids over 3.
The Museum of Natural Science also has a butterfly exhibit in essentially a glasshouse, which even young kids enjoy (although they won't get much out of the rest of the museum).
Both museums are close to Hermann Park, which has the zoo in it.
I can't remember how old Anna's DD is but the Health Museum is right by the Children's Museum and super fun for kids starting around age 8 or so. It doesn't get much love but we went for field trips and it is very interactive and interesting.
I went on lots of fields trips to Childrens Museum, Natural Science Museum, and the zoo when I was a kid. I really enjoyed all of them. I especially loved the Children's Museum. It was so fun!

She's almost 7, as is one of the little girls we'll be seeing down there. They would probably be into this, but in that case, I won't plan on going there the day we're getting together with friends who have younger kids. Thanks!
