I think 8x10 would look better than the one you have, but I would also worry about tripping on it. I think it would be okay for most but I am unfortunately clumsy and would likely break my face.
Yes, and this is the exact problem I keep posting about. Get with the program, Harvard!
ETA: I'm kidding you, of course. That sounded mean.
ok, we have that kind of gap between our dining room rug and buffet. It works out ok, and isn't a big deal.
The concern I have is the coming-towards-the-chairs angle. We walk sort of diagonally across the edge of where the rug would be all.the.time. Even now with the smaller rug, I sometimes trip (no one else does, ha). Do you do that?
And sequins, Ikea doesn't have any rugs low pile in a color I like that are even close to the size I'm looking for, unfortunately. The closest they have is the one I already have! The next size up is still too skinny, but then too long for the space!

Ok. Have you tried rugsusa.com? They have a 70% off sale now I think. I've read a ton of good reviews about the website. I ordered my living room rug from amazon but it was the same seller as rugs usa. It's not potterybarn quality but it's soft and doesn't shed.
Ok, I was going to say don't do the rug as shown w the tape bc would be weird/difficult to walk on. But then I looked at our dining room and we have exactly the same situation with the rug in the main pathway, lol. It's apparently such a problem that I never even noticed our rug is from Pottery Barn but it's a regular carpeted one, not jute or other super flat material, and it's not caused any problem in 5 years.
ETA in addition to being in the main pathway, the edge of our rug is also between the table and hutch as shown in your pic, and it looks just fine
I am a convert to animal hides in the dining room. They are super thin and lay flat nicely which is great with chairs going in and out, and literally everything in the world wipes off (my SIL dropped a whole bottle of red wine and it wiped up no problem). Plus they are weird shapes and allow me to nor worry about all the measurements required for dining room rug math lol.

Like, literal animal hides?
I don't mind the look, but as a vegetarian I really don't think I want a gigantic animal skin where I eat. LOL!

LoL, yes! You can find the real deal at ikea for reasonable prices, or there are great faux options online
Okay. If I got 8 x 10, the edge of the rug would be where the tape measure lays. What do you think? Trip hazard out the wazoo?
We all walk that path at least one billion times a day.
If you all say this is a good size I'm going to kill my husband because he totally talked me out of it last time.
I don't like this. Not because it's a tripping hazard, but because I envision that particular edge of the rug being filthy. Shoes, dirty kid feet, and that much traffic. No bueno.

I have an indoor/outdoor rug in the dining room and it is super flat. I don't think it would be a tripping hazard there. The indoor/outdoor rugs are also cheap and easy to keep clean. Perfect for dining areas. RugsUsa has lots.
I'm now looking for a new RUG for my dining room (you jerks), and I think maybe a dark "natural" color might look good. Or charcoal. And jute looks like it has some good internal, subtle color variance and is allegedly hardy.
I just measured and to be truly big enough to fill the room, NOT block any floor vents, AND not be exactly in the middle of the primary living room-to-kitchen pathway, I need something 9'6" x 10'6".
A carpet guy will be able to bind carpet to your exact measurements so you have a rug the right size. Are you dead set on natural fibres? There are so many lovely berber options these days and they look so tidy compared to cut pile. Not sure what kind of look you're going for.
