Cas's post needed to be about one page long - her initial motivation was good (compassion), even if her delivery was off, for the reasons described above. And because people like LM and me and others have the same initial reaction, I'm glad that she posted so we could start to have some of the conversations that are outlined in the FB thread.
TBH, my personal reaction to the first page went:
(reading Cas's post): Nice sentiment but awkard that he didn't know about it. (reading the follow ups): oh gosh, yeah, it's even more awkward then I thought. Hadn't even considered that the action itself might be somewhat self defeating in its delivery as it is based on singling out person based on perceived ethnicity/religion. (summary): learn something new every day.
The end.
But then things went all apeshit and cas got weird and then really really really obtuse and I stopped reading.
What infuriates me most is that we've done nothing to curb the hate speech resonating from the bowels of this nation. Not shit. "Oh Free Speech!!" But, when Free Speech starts inciting violence, it's not fucking free anymore. anybody bothered to say two words about the Joplin, Mo Mosque going up in flames? The second fire there none-the-less.
Or that idiots in TN have been all over Gov. Haslam's newest staffer because she's ... Muslim? Or that the mosque here have had signs stolen? I'm tired of the bullshit and hate spewing out of the mouths of moronic imbeciles who pass themselves off as "great Americans." Ain't shit great about hate crimes, hate speech, hate arson, and mass murder.
OAN - OP your friend needs new FB friends. Sunday, this was all over my FB newsfeed. My local newspaper and media stations have been very busy covering the temple shooting and the demented fuck who did it.
I think mx hit it on the head for me - it really, REALLY bothered me how it kept coming back to "I feel so bad for them because they keep getting mistaken for Muslims." Like that's the problem, and not the fact that people would shoot up a fucking mosque because it was full of Muslims in the first damn place. I don't need to know how to tell the difference between a Muslim and a Sikh in order to know that it's not okay to shoot up a place of worship because of the religion it represents. Even if I DID assume they were Muslim, it wouldn't change a damn thing about how I would relate to them or if I'd accept them or not so why do I need to be lectured on that shit?
Ohhhh....OK. This is actually a great recap. I read half of page one and then got busy, only coming back to discover the post exploded to 15+pages.
In 16+ pages nobody even mentioned the irony and stereotype of casgm approaching a Sikh at a gas station of all places. There's no way I'm the first to notice that.
