Blankets- I had 6 and that was more than enough. Bibs-I'd probably keep 12 if they are just the little teething/baby bibs. I bought bigger bibs when he was eating solids.
If they're little newborn bibs, maybe keep a few. But if they're older baby feeding bibs, keep them all. The wear and tear means they'll all get used eventually.
i didn't have flannel type receiving blankets, but i had 14 a&a swaddles. we used every single one of those in the beginning. the reflux, omg. we were using 4-6 blankets a day, used them as burp rags because we needed a full body drape when burping him, we'd lay one on the floor/couch/bed before setting him on it.

I have nicer blankets, swaddling blankets, and swaddle sleepers, these are just the thin flannel ones...just wanted to make sue I was justified in returning some, I think I can easily return 7
Now onto onesies and outfits, I have 3 newborn sizes...

How many 0-3 months is too much
in this case, i would keep 5, max. they are fairly useless by most accounts.
i know so many people poopoo newborn sizes, but R was a solid 8lbs5oz and still wore newborn for ~5 weeks. he swam in anything bigger. it's so dependent on your baby's body proportions.
0-3... he went through these fairly quickly, maybe wore them for 6-8 weeks? but we were doing a lot of onsie changes every day (again, the reflux) so i had probably 20, and appreciated that number. outfits fancier than a onsie and knit pants - i would keep 2-3 and return the rest unless you have a lot of events to dress baby up for.
I have twins that spit up a lot. We used receiving blankets as drop cloths to protect furniture and the floor and also sometimes switched them out for tummy time. Even with all that I'd say I'd want under 10 of them. Ditto everyone else with the bibs. It depends what sizes/materials they are. We used bibs for drooling for months and one of the girls would soak a bib in a few minutes so we went through a lot.
Tiny baby clothes are so hard to predict because you don't know how big the baby will be. I will say you really don't need many outfits. Our girls lived in sleepers for months.
I'll be the outlier and say keep all bibs that you like. Both of my boys were major spitters. They wore bibs all day, every day for 6+ months. It didn't matter what they were wearing, all anyone saw was the bib. I liked having variety. I chose them just like I'd choose an outfit. Coordinating color or pictures or sayings or whatever. They could have worn the same outfit every day and no one would have noticed because they were always wearing stupid bibs.
Depending on the variety of the bibs, I would say keep lots.
We had some that were great for newborns and caught spit up/spillover milk when we were trying to figure out nipple shields and all that mess. Then, like others said, many absorbent/regular fabric ones for drooly phases, and then "food" bibs for first foods and into toddlerhood. Cloth ones get stained really easily and need washing after a meal, but the wipeable type don't do much good in the earlier days of just drool.
Receiving blankets? Like 4. I never used them much. If it's a combo of other bigger/thicker/actual blankets I'd keep probably 12. I usually rotate 3 in the house, 2 in the car, daycare wanted 1, grandma has an extra. I like a couple more for laundry day.
As for the bibs, none..ha. I never really used them with either kid. And when they got to solids I rotated the same 3 big plastic bibs or the ones made out of a washcloth. I found the other ones sort of worthless.
I didn't do the little bibs- DS wasn't a spitter and he got his teeth pretty early, so he didn't drool for months on end. My godchild was a spitter, 25 bibs would have been a single days worth until she was about 6 months old.
Once DS was eating solids, we did the terry bibs with the knit necklines. Figure one per meal/messy snack daily.
Blankets moonlight as great burp cloths so I'd probably keep a dozen. Two bibs at each grandparents house, and 12-15 at home. I can't imagine needing more than that. As for clothes, you might want to wait and see before discarding any. My boys were born exactly the same weight, 7lbs 8oz, and one was in newborn size for 2 months, the other for 2 weeks because he was a whole 1" longer.
We had probably 15 receiving blankets in heavy rotation. We used them for swaddling, drop cloths, spit up, barriers for changing him (on the floor at home or in public), in the car, etc. We always had an extra 1-2 in the car and one in the diaper bag.
I'd err on the side of returning stuff if you don't think you will use it. You can always buy more once the baby gets here. However, I really like blankets because I cover everything I put DS on since he spits up frequently. Spares are nice too for the car, grandparents, and having one or two in different rooms of the house.
Outfits - I'd keep a variety of sizes and types of outfits to see what you like. We have pretty much exclusively put DS in footed sleepers since birth because I think they are so much easier for changes and they are warmer. All those regular onesies and pants have sat unused in his dresser. I imagine once the weather warms and he goes to daycare, I might start to use these more. At two months I still undress down to his diaper for feeding because he is such a messy spitter. I'd be changing his outfits every time he ate otherwise, so easy on/off is my main criteria for clothes right now.
