In one of my horrible bad landings (real life, not a dream) one of the pilots came on the intercom, "5seconds of silence, a voice says "ummm..." And then the intercom cuts off again. Meanwhile in back the smell of vomit is in the air because so many people were motion sick from the plane swinging all over. I was just like "wtf, don't get on the intercom at all if you're too busy to finish your sentence!!!"
That photo (I won't watch the video) is so like nightmares I've had. I've had a pretty serious flying phobia for about 15 years now. I've had so many nightmares about being in plane crashes and also watching planes crash as a bystander... And they are such realistic dreams they do nothing but deepen my phobia because it's like it has really happened. They experience felt authentic even if it wasn't. I honestly don't know when or if I'll be able to travel again.
Were you ever told what those dreams meant? I don't have a fear of flying (at least I don't think I do) but my most common "bad" dream is watching a plane crash as a bystander. I'm never on the plane, it's always me watching it fall out of the sky. Just curious what they are supposed to mean.. Or maybe deep down I do fear flying!
Anyway, yup this comes straight from my nightmares.
I have recurring plane crash/terrorist/hostage taking dreams whenever I'm super anxious about something happening in real life. Usually when I deal with, or at least acknowledge, the source of the anxiety that recurring dream stops.
These pilots had what appear to be a lot of flight hours too. That's what scares me about some of these crashes--especially when they are attributed to pilot error but the pilots are experienced.
I had a hellish flight last year on an African carrier where we had 25 minutes of severe clear air turbulence and the pilots never made an announcement the entire time. Being a flight full of East Africans everyone was screaming and calling on God. I was like what the fuck is going on in the cockpit that objects are literally flying around the cabin and half of your passengers are crying and you any even get on the intercom to say sorry? Like how fucked must we be if you're too busy to communicate?
Did they ever say anything? Have you flown Emirates? Do they communicate? I am still trying to determine how to get to TZ
I love Emirates. Anytime I have the opportunity to fly with them, I'll take it!

How do you like South African Airlines? I was thinking of flying ATL-JNB JNB-DAR because the flight from JNB to DAR is so much shorter but I don't know. H is pissed and refuses to go to Turkey anymore otherwise we would be flying Turkish Airlines through IST.

I also like SAA but never flew them Long haul, only between Joburg and Cape Town a million times and to Namibia once. But I've always been happy with their service.
I personally kind of like doing the flight through Dubai since it makes the 2 flights more even in time instead of one long long haul flight from the U.S. to Southern Africa. But I know others prefer it the way you're saying you'd do it with Atl to Jnb, so it's just personal preference.
But I'd still prob choose emirates over SAA even though there is nothing wrong with SAA.

When are you going?!
Honestly breaking up the trip may be fun. Will be there the end of July.
I want to know what happened to the vehicle in the picture. In the video, it looks like it's a school bus, but I suppose it could be a large passenger van. But something clearly happens to it as you can see the wing clip it.

The CNN clip linked in this thread shows the vehicle afterwards -- it looks like a yellow commercial type of van, or a taxi. The windshield is shattered and the hood banged up, but they show a man walking around and opening the driver's side door as it's sitting there stopped and empty -- I'm assuming that's the driver and he wasn't badly hurt.
I can't imagine having your CAR get hit by a freaking PLANE. OMG.
I wish I knew this before I hopped my happy self on an AirAsia flight year :?. I'd think I'd be nervous to do that after this year.
Just a really rapid expansion in the airlines over there. DH has gotten cold calls from Asian airlines offering at least 3x what he makes in the states to work there. We're good in the US for now.
please tell me Philippines Airlines is not one of them. I'm flying them in < 3 weeks and I'm even more terrified than usual.

No I've never discussed them with a therapist or anything. I know it's typical to develop phobias in ones 20s. I had a couple bad/rough landings and those were followed by nightmares. And then I had another rough flight and that reinforced the fear, and the nightmares. So I never looked for any deeper meaning to it. Just a series of unfortunate experiences at a time in my life when I think my psyche was extra fragile and fearful.
I'm right there with you. Had some bad flights, same kind of plane crash dreams and also developed my phobia in my 20s. I tried hypnosis. My DH says he thinks I'm a little better but I don't think it did much except help me visualize something peaceful while flying. Ativan worked better.

Just curious, why SAA over Mango for these trips?
When I was flying personal I'd always fly Mango or Kulula, but most of my back and forth trips were for work and we worked with travel agents who would often book us on SAA.
My broke ass could never afford SAA for personal travel lol.

OK I have been reading about this crash because I am a nervous flyer. To your point I have been reading the airline pilot forums and someone published a report showing the Pilots turned off the wrong engine . Basically the left engine failed and when that happens in a prop plane that propeller will feather to reduce drag so the plan can fly on one engine. The pilots ended up turning off the right engine, so they had no engines( and were barely over 1000 feet), then lost the airspeed required to control the airplane, and we saw what happened. So sad

I saw that over on APC too. Single engine failures are such a major part of training. Seriously scary that they could botch it so badly, if that's really what happened.

They were saying that plane can fly very well with one engine. I am horrified if this is true but it really goes to you( and the point on the boards) regarding the lack of training. When I go to Korea to visit origami we will be taking the train and then the ferry to Japan. However I would trust Korean Air and ANA even regionally.

Oh, that sounds like an awesome trip! Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate one bit to go on Korea or ANA. Some of these newer companies that are springing up though....

IS PHILIPPINE AIRLINES ONE OF THEM??? I'm not at all freaking out or anything.
