If I was planning on getting pregnant soon, OMG. She said it sort of jokingly because we are launching a new system that I will be heavily involved in and will likely end up training end users. It's not expected to launch for at least 6-9 months. Basically this would be a big deal and probably involve a promotion.
We do plan to TTC in the next 6 months but hell if I'm telling her that.
She's sweet but also asked how far apart I want my kids, etc. Totally trying to figure out if I was going to bail on the project halfway through to go on mat leave.
Imagine my boss' surprise when I told her I was pregnant three months into my new promoted position. I told her at 12 weeks, so you can do the math and know I waited pretty much 0 days to start TTC. Oops. She didn't hide it well. But she hides nothing well so I expected it.
My former boss asked me if we were planning on having kids within the next year. I was actually about 14 weeks pregnant and didn't expect that question so I said "well, I'm actually pregnant now". She was in her upper 50's and childless and I don't think I was showing. I was not pleased but didn't take it to HR. I'm not sure it was malicious.
My manager and I are close. She may have been one of the first people I told. However, she also was with me for a 3 year fertility quest too. She was supportive with appointments, travel schedule, etc. Sorry - people are so awkward about pregnancy. I work with a lot of guys and tons of them took me aside to ask about my plans to return. lol. Not malicious, just trying to be sweet.

My boss has made mention/asked me several times but I always deflect. He is just generally inappropriate but I like him in general. Sometimes I think he has asgergers or something like that where he seriously is unaware that he's being inappropriate.

Lol, if your boss was a woman I would think we had the same boss. My boss is a really sweet woman with 3 children of her own, but sometimes the shit that comes out of her mouth is totally inappropriate. I often wonder if she has mild asbergers since she is wicked smart in other areas. I guess the joke is ongoing though, i was hired in July 2012 and i guess she and the ED bet that I would be pregnant within a year (I tested positive 10/31/12) and had my kid during our year-end (6/30 y/e, had him 7/1). She half jokingly asked when hypothetical child two will be born, hiding in fear that I will leave at year end again for ML.
