A new ad from a super PAC supporting President Obama ties former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to a family’s loss of health insurance and a woman’s subsequent death from cancer.
It’s the fourth hard-hitting ad from Priorities USA Action that focuses on former workers at companies closed by Romney’s former private equity firm, Bain Capital.
“I don’t think Mitt Romney understands what he’s done to people’s lives by closing the plant,” said Joe Soptic, a former employee at GST Steel in Kansas City, in the ad. He says he lost his health care, and then his wife became ill.
“I don’t know how long she was sick, and I think maybe she didn’t say anything because she knew that we couldn’t afford the insurance,” Soptic adds. When she finally went to the hospital they found out that it was stage-four cancer, he says. She died soon after.
Soptic concludes, “I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he’s done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned.”
The Republican candidate left Bain before GST Steel’s 2001 bankruptcy; Obama’s team has argued that the story is fair because Romney was at Bain when the initial investment was made. Politico notes that Ranae Soptic died in 2006, long after the plant closed, and CNN adds that at some points during that time she had insurance through her own employer.
Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad one of many “discredited and dishonest attacks” meant to “conceal the administration’s deplorable economic record.”
Man, those super pacs can say any damn thing they want, can't they?
I will definitely remember this...though, to me, still incredibly low.
I agree with you. It's a stretch, for one, and also unfair. I hate, hate HATE negative false ads. The super pacs have only made it worse, IMO.
I got irrationally angry when I heard an anti-Obama ad on my local liberal talk show. I know it's owned by a national company and anyone can buy ads, but it's like my little liberal bastion and I was pissed to have it ruined.

While I think blame for her death on Romney is completely unreasonable and irrelevant to the political discourse, I do think the realities of what happens when people do not have access to health insurance surely is relevant.

this
and I hate the super PACs, but maybe that's because I'm not rich enough to have my own.
7 years after leaving Bain - he is responsible for a an advanced cancer death? No mention of those currently out of work without health care due to this Obama economy. How many deaths has that caused? Is Obama responsible for those? You can expect more of this from Obama.

Is there ever ANY topic that isn't about Obama to you?

I know I am pissing in the wind with this but Super PAC does not equal Obama

Romney signed papers saying he was still with Bain in 2002. He also testified to the Mass Election board that he maintain his ties to Mass while running the olympics because he was still involved with Bain.

Agreed. The tie-in to Bain and Romney is a stretch and unnecessary--to simply relate his views on healthcare to the possible consequences for Americans is enough.
A super PAC pulling low blows with a ridiculously false ad? Say it ain't so...
(I'm extra bitter on this. One of the perks of living in a battleground state is that I've been bombarded with this crap for weeks. WEEKS. And it's not even mid-August. I may have to DVR every single thing I watch from here on out so I can fast-forward through all the annoying commercials.)
Ha, we have had so many Obama ads, I feel like I am in the wrong state (pro-Obama). Dude, you have a D after your name. Save your money, Maryland would vote for anyone with a D after their name.
I think everyone is forgetting that Super Pacs are people, and even if they are not, they are so shut up. And anyway, this is about freedom. The freedom to lie. This is why I can say things like Romney is a muslim, and its totally true! Wheeeeeee!
I think its funny how Rs (not on this board) are getting the hump when their exact same tactics are being used against them - Birth Ceritificate / Release your taxes and "boo hoo, the super pacs are making stuff up" lolz
