DENVER — A Denver police officer has been removed from street duty and reassigned after costing taxpayers more than $1 million.
Officer Shawn Miller has been investigated 16 times for excessive force. The city has paid more than $1 million in two excessive force cases where Miller was involved.
But the latest complaint forced officials to take him off patrol duties.
A man has filed an excessive force lawsuit against Miller. He says he called police when customers started threatening him. When Miller arrived, he ended up handcuffing the store operator, telling him it was a frivolous 911 call.
Police say they have made significant changes to the disciplinary process since Chief Robert White took over three years ago. In the next few days, the department will release all of the internal affairs records in all of Miller’s cases.
