I've been putting off filing and this is BALLS. I already bought my copy at Costco. CA has a free e-file system, but I've never been able to use it as well as TT.
I've used TT for a couple years and love it, but never use it to file my state return. Utah's return is so easy to file if you've already done the federal one so I get to save some money
I wonder if it's really just Turbo Tax with this issue, or just the first one they noticed?
I tried to use Turbo Tax but they didn't have the ability to file a form I needed. HR Block is expensive as fuck this year. I'm using TaxAct.
I haven't even logged into HR Block yet this year--what are they charging now? I'll probably still use them because I have for 10 years or so, which means all of our info is already there and I just have to plug in new $ figures. And I'm lazy, so that's a fat win.

I used to use TT, but last year it kept messing up my taxes even though the info was entering correctly (it didn't account for the $2500 that was now taxable out of my daycare FSA since I didn't realize i couldn't take 5K under MFS). So now we use H&R block adn I double check with Tax Act.

I've used TaxAct for YEARS! Fun Fact - the IRS was using their system to do e-returns when they first started the process. (told to me by a former IRS employee)
I love TaxAct - very easy to use and I've never had an issue with them.

It's not a whole lot. I can't remember what Federal is though ours should be free because my husband is in the National Guard and they're being finicky. But the state is $36 and no. TaxAct is like $19.99 for Federal and State.

So far, I'm reaaaaaaaaaaally loving them. They explain things well and have access to all of the forms. There are things in here I didn't know about, like deducting my husband's Guard expenses without having to itemize. I'm hooked.

It also does a series of Alerts to let you know if something isn't correct. Love it. I used to do taxes myself and take it to a preparer with my credit union. One year, I just lucked up on TaxAct and found it simple to use. Been using them ever since.
I also like that they show you the actual forms before you file. I feel like HR Block and other software treat you like a dummy who shouldn't see all the information or the actual forms lest you start crying and rocking in the corner.

The way their software is set up you should be able to preview everything before you file. *I think I'm remembering this correctly* But, they do have all the forms listed so that you can view it. I find the Prior Year Summary to be most helpful because I can see what we did differently in the current year.
Also, it has a calculator at the top that keeps track of what you owe or have as a return. This is what fuels my rants about being a member of the GOP at tax time. LOL And the software does an excellent job of explaining your deductions, credits, etc. It's simple and easy to understand.
I feel like I should say that I'm not a part owner or paid to say nice things about TaxAct. LOL

$36 is nothing when you're guaranteed to get your billions back!

Every year I ask DH if we could use tax software but every year he says no.
So we have a tax guy instead. He thinks tax guy gets us back more money than software ever could each year. I feel like I hear so many great things about the tax software that I'd like to give them a shot one year.

You don't pay until or unless you file so if I were you, I'd do it all in TaxAct and see if there's a difference. I would imagine you aren't getting any more back from Tax guy then you're paying him.
