My step-brothers wife has a cleaning business and doesn't report taxes. They just bought a house, had a week long vacation to Hawaii, bought a $5000 hot tub, and are going on a cruise soon. They also go out A LOT. She gets quite a bit in child support and also receives assistance. I keep wondering if the IRS will ever be the wiser. Or what she is going to do when her kids turn 18 and she loses that extra money.
I am admitting here that I totally judge her.
You can get Form 3949-A on the IRS website to report the unreported income. It can be anonymous if you want.
My mom laid out how much my sister pays my parents for her car, mortgage, and utilities last week. It's $300 per month. They bought all of this for her and are having her pay them back interest free.
They can do what they want with their money. My sister is a single teacher, so I get that our situations are not comparable, but WHY TELL ME, MOM.
This is the biggest issue with my ILs. I hate knowing. I hate knowing the sum of money they have given. One summer they told us they had given him 10K. That was the summer we had just bought our new house and had Leo. It is cool, we couldn't have used that money wisely or anything.
And we don't expect to get handouts from our parents. But I don't want to fucking know if another member of the family is bleeding them dry while we live on a modest fucking budget.
I can't figure out how someone could possibly owe 40k in taxes for one year. Unless they made ridiculous sums under the table and didn't pay a single penny of taxes.

They are a 1099. If you have no taxes taken out of all the money you earn during the year, you will owe a big chunk.
You can also get screwed if you have a much more profitable year than you estimated for your quarterly payments (which our accountant based on the previous years income). DH and I ended up owing $10k in April the last year he was self-employed because his work picked way up.
Last night was the first time I can remember ever that I tipped less than 20%, I tipped 15% I felt so ashamed. I did it because I asked twice for a glass of water and the server never gave me one. We sat for a while after our meal to chat with friends and I was so thirsty!! lol.
If you want to feel better, I tipped less than 15% for the first time in my life last week. I tipped one dollar on a $30 check. We were at the restaurant for 20 minutes- no one came over. We grabbed a server because we were starving, and asked to order. She brought us our waters and said our server "Jennifer" would come over immediately, but she had placed our orders. Ten minutes later, we tried to talk to the server the previous one had pointed out as "Jennifer"- nope, has no idea. Long story short, it took 50 minutes and three servers to bring me a plate of nachos. I was given the nachos by the first server we had talked to after being ignored, so she knew we had not been served at all (note, we had to ask if they were not sitting in the back since no one was actually serving our table). Ten minutes go by, and she brings out the plate, making an excuse for it taking so long, "sorry, we didn't forget about you guys, nachos just take a little longer, careful, plate is hot"- GUYS. The plate was not hot. It was not even warm, because they had thrown shredded cheese on a pile of chips and forgotten to heat it AT ALL. At this point, we've waited an hour for cold chips and cheese. In all, we had to get up from our table to get food or water 6 times, and "our" waitress never made an appearance. There is more tomfuckery but I'm getting grouchy and this post is already longer than intended.
All I can picture for the bare minimum for bringing someone dinner is a gallon of milk and this:Â View Attachment That would be delicious in my world.Â

I feel you. I SO FEEL YOU. Let's row together in that boat.

I could not imagine ratting someone out. If they get caught it's on them, but it's none of my business.
My SIL is similar. My H is the baby and SIL has been given tons of hand outs in the 10 years we've been together/married. Bailed out of payday loans, given money for rent, car payment on her brand new car, etc. We had sold her a car when she had her 3rd kid and the payment was the vehicle they couldn't all fit in and $4,500 and it took us months to get the money. Then my H loaned her money I didn't want to loan her and she didn't pay us back. She actually said "I could have never paid you back" when he worked it out with their mom. When H bought his last new car, she actually wanted us to GIVE her the car we were replacing instead of selling it. It was very much this:
I have a sister with the same "give me" attitude and my dad will never admit it, but we're pretty sure he bought her a new car last year.
My siblings in law get hand outs from ILs. But it's not like cars. It's like bail money and court fees. I'm not that jealous lol.
I want to buy a roomba. DH has an expensive hobby and because of that, I get this "whatever I do what I want!" Attitude. So I'm going to buy a roomba and he can't say anything about it.
But god, how many models do they have? 40? WTF is a virtual lighthouse? It sounds like my house will be absolutely filthy without lighthouse technology. Huh?

At least the money is going to family? My FIL wastes it all on random women and their delinquent children and now is expecting his kids to bail him out of financial trouble.
It's like bail money and court fees. I'm not that jealous lol.
LOL
With my BIL, he is by far the fanciest dresser and has the more flashier career. So on the outside he looks like he is all that. That makes it even more maddening.
ILs casually said the other day he dropped $500 at J Crew. He is currently unemployed.
What the fuck are you buying at J Crew when you don't even have a job. I have a job and don't drop that kind of coin in one purchase.
Story of their lives.
My goal is to not raise my boys to do this to me someday. Or not allow it or something.

BF is self-employed, and this is his first year of being self-employed, so I feel bad for him. Everybody's like, "use your tax refund to buy WTF's engagement ring!" and he's just like (wilted).
I'm 26 and I give my taxes to my dad every year and I give 0 fucks.

I read the thread and it sounds like someone is a 1099 employee and this includes estimates for first quarter taxes. If it also includes the last quarter taxes, it's still a ton of money, but it makes more sense.
I think a big chunk of the OP was for retirement plans as well, so not all of the 40k was for taxes. Some was for personal investments.
But, I think what made LHC shake her head was the fact that one could come up with 40k in cash by just not paying a CC bill for a few months. You know, when a lot of people don't even gross that in an entire year.

I agree with LHC. A $40,000 bill would be completely unmanageable for us as I said in my original post. We'd be completely screwed.
But I was replying to someone who was saying that she didn't see how it was possible. It's possible if you make a shit ton of money or if you make slightly less than a shit ton, but are a 1099 employee.

Yes, you want lighthouses! The roomba doesn't go to the second room until the first room is done. They can also act as walls, keeping the roomba out of someplace he shouldn't go. Mine is a 780 and came with 2, and I'm thinking about getting one or 2 more.
I told dh I wanted to run errands alone today. He doesn't like to be alone, so when I request this it hurts his feelings AND he is sad when I'm gone. I feel bad but I'm about to kill my family.
As it turns out, dh had my tires shipped to the wrong store by accident. He was all apologetic. I am THRILLED. An extra hour of alone time? Yes please.
FI and I will, at some point, have to set a cut off date for rescheduling our wedding if he doesn't get his documents back.
He made a mistake, and while I'm really not mad at him, sometimes I am because there is so much stress and worry and I will be so devastated if we have to reschedule.
I am not even going to try to control my rage when I take my ring back in to the store to get it replaced. My mouth is all numb from the dentist, so this should be fun.

Just try not to drool!!
She will be at Tiffany and Co. Not drooling is almost impossible.

Also laughable to me was the idea that we could pay off our credit cards in full on any given month.
We owe so much on our cards, it would make ML people gasp and MM people throw up. We have a feasible plan to pay everything off in two years, but there is just no way unless we win the lottery that we could tackle it any sooner than that.
On top of that, I am now a 1099 employee and am dreading taxes this year because I know we're going to owe. (Not $40,000, thank god, otherwise I really would have to stage an untimely death.)

So without lighthouses what happens? It just goes nuts cleaning everything at once and some spots don't get cleaned?
I just ate an entire box of Girl Scout cookies and am so so regretting that decision. The whole damn box. At least they were thin mints, so pretty healthy. I am never eating again.
