An old neighbor of mine had a dog that got out constantly. He wasn't neutered and was chasing after the ladies. We lived near a busy street and I was terrified of finding him dead, so I had him neutered. I'm not sure the asshole ever noticed, and the dog started staying in his yard after that.

You had surgery done on someone else's dog without their knowledge or approval? That's an interesting approach.

I don't know how I feel about this, but- HOW DID THEY NOT NOTICE?? My dog was weird for two weeks after getting neutered.

You went way over the line.
What if something happened to the dog during the procedure? What would you have done?

dizzydee, please come back and share the specifics of this. You put this animal in your car, drove it to the vet, and no one noticed? And the vet was perfectly willing to neuter a dog that didn't belong to you? And after the procedure, you did what? You brought the dog into your house to recover and come off the anesthesia? Or did you just throw him back out on the streets? And after all of this, did you inform the owner when you realized he didn't notice?

My flameful is that while I don't believe that someone got some random neighbors dog neutered I don't really throw too much shade if she did. I am assuming this isn't some show dog that was wandering trying to impregnate the neighbors dogs. I would never do it, so much could go terribly wrong and it is way crossing a line. However, I know assholes who don't neuter their dogs for reasons like "I don't want to have a ball-less dog" and then let them roam free. I wish someone would secretly neuter those dogs.

You remind me of this family member I have who tells these outrageous "stories" at family parties. Newcomers are always her most rapt audience, while the rest of us are over in the corner like, "oh, she's going with the 'I neutered a stray dog who kept getting out and his owner DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE!' story again."

You were terrified of finding him dead so you neutered him?
Does neutering give dogs superpowers to survive being hit by a car?
Annnyways. The next door neighbors dog kept getting out and they didn't give a crap. Once the tornado siren was going off and I could hear the dog barking in the yard. He was left out in thunderstorms, cold etc. Animal control/police did nothing. He was a tiny poodle mix, like 10 lbs. I said if he gets out one more time, I'm keeping him. I waited and spied on those people but he never got out again. I should have just taken him the time before that.

How does that make any sense?
I think she meant his drive to wander would be reduced because he wouldn't care about finding mates?
Was this in the country? I might believe it then. My FIL was once just a moment away from purchasing a full grown horse for $15. He has neither stable nor barn nor fence.

I guess that might make sense to her. I just don't see the point. Unless she also secretly fixed the neighbors fence at 1 am so he didn't know about that either. My dog is neutered and squirrels still catch his eye from time to time in a non sexual way lol.

How.....is this relevant? Lol
Because FIL would also have had his neighbor's dog neuteured and the neighbor wouldn't have noticed. Or vice versa. The neighbor currently has a horse tied to a tree in his front yard, which is probably where my FIL got the idea. One time I asked him what his dogs' name were and he looked at me like I had two heads. I just name them myself and hope they're there the next time I go to visit.
Oh wait, I just saw the busy street part. Well I'm fresh out of ideas then! I still choose to believe the story though because it amuses me.

Maybe he's just really into squirrels sexually, ok?

If he is I will love him just the same.
Except if it's that asshole squirrel that taunts my other dog. They will be forbidden to see each other.

I hope you're lying. That's just wrong. And how would they not notice their dog doesn't have balls anymore? And didn't they notice stitches?
Our county has a spay/neuter program for strays/ferals, it's free. He was also vaccinated. The poor dog lived tied to a tree, în a partially fenced yard and I bought a dog house, I helped pay for food and I gave him water. When he got loose I chased him, not the owner. I knew he was young enough that if I got him neutered the drive to run would lessen. My plan was to neuter and then rehome him, but the guy got a girlfriend and she actually started taking care of him.

How did he get out so often if he was tied to a tree?
Please know that I'm not some douche that doesn't care that my dog jumps the fence. The reason I'm "in" with animal control is because A.) It's a small town B.)I volunteer at the shelter C.) I take my dog to the same chiropractor/acupuncturist as one of the officers. I've also talked to them numerous times about how to keep Toby contained. They do love Toby. Truthfully, he's been picked up 3 times ever by animal control, but he has gotten out a lot, when we find him, he's always a block or two away.
I've tried just about everything to keep him in. For the past year, the only time he has been "allowed" outside is on a leash with either H or I walking him either in our yard, or on a walk. Our house is in the middle of our yard with a 5ft fence around it. I've tried 6 foot fences, wood fences, dog runs, anti-jump harness, chicken wire, running him, taking him to doggy daycare, behaviorist, trainers, electric fences, electric collars, I've looked recently about getting some of these installed (http://www.coyoteroller.com). I posted on the boards here before. He broke the screen out my guest room window and jumped out to wander. I spent $3k on neck surgery because he had a bulging disc FROM jumping the fence. I don't want him jumping the fence. Please believe me when I say every suggestion/google search I've come across I've tried. I really have.
The only way we've stopped him from jumping was leashing him, however, he still can get out. This time it happened to be one of the neighbor kids that came in when my H was upstairs. He saw an opening and took it.
Sorry, I know it's a flameful thread...I just wanted you guys to know that I truly am devastated, and already have plans to try and fix his wandering problem if we find him again. I've talked to a fence guy about building a custom dog run that will be off a doggie door so he can go in and out as he pleases...then maybe he won't feel the need to wander as much? I'm willing to try anything.
Oh, and he is neutered...but my neighbor did not neuter him.
I 100% get it. We had a very similar dog. Even one moment of turning our head, holding the front door open to long etc and she was gone at lightening speed. It was really hard.
To be fair, when we first moved into our house, our dog got out a few times. She was found a total of three times by separate people over a week or two. It took us forever to figure out how the hell she was getting out, but we finally did and ended up buying a deadbolt for our gate when we figured out that's where she was getting out. We just got really lucky that nice people found her and took care of her for us. We live near a couple of really busy roads and I was beyond sick each time someone called to say they had her.
We fixed the problem as soon as we knew what the problem was though. She hasn't escaped since then, thank goodness.
Well, we've lived here since March 2008 and I know these people have lived here for several years, they told me that when we talked about the school system. This happened about a year ago. I've also never had outside dogs and if my dog got out three times, I'd figure it out before letting it happen again. We've only had inside animals and let them out when we are home.
Ah, well, yeah. Just so you know, our dog is an inside dog, but she has access to a dog door at all times, so she has free run of the yard even when we're not home. We kept thinking we had fixed the problem by doing various things, but the final, actual fix was a new bolt for the gate.
