I'm not actually a practicing Catholic. I was never even confirmed because my mom didn't want to raise me in the church. But I've used Lent as a way to try to unlearn some unhealthy habits because it's only 40 days. That seems more manageable to me. I rarely ever crave fast food anymore after last year.
I am not religious in any fashion but I am using this time to increase the amount of volunteer hours I spend with the woman's shelter and abortion fund. This is something I have needed to do so this is as great as time as any.

I once tried to give up swearing for lent. I ended up swearing more. I would swear, catch myself swearing, get upset, which caused me to swear!. True story.
A little late posting this, but thought it was in line with the real meaning of Lent (from a Catholic Extension post: Suggestions" for beginning a 'give-up' list.)
Give up negativism; be positive. Give up complaining; be grateful.
Give up pessimism; be an optimist. Give up harsh judgments; think kindly thoughts.
Give up worry; trust divine providence. Give up discouragement; be full of hope.
Give up anger; be more patient. Give up pettiness; be more mature.
Give up gloom; enjoy the beauty around you. Give up jealousy; pray for trust.
Give up gossiping; control your thoughts. Give up sin; turn to virtue.
I would like to report that when I went out to eat with my parents today, I asked for soup on the side with my sandwich instead of the (delicious) fries it usually comes with. The tomato-fennel soup was delicious and I wasn't quite as tempted as I thought I'd be.
