My 18 month old has had two stomach bugs in the past 3 weeks. The first we thought was from the course of antibiotics he had just finished, but then I caught it. He threw up every time He nursed for 5 days. A week and a half later, he was vomiting again but this time with diarrhea. Again within an hour of nursing, but did not throw up at all when I was at work and not nursing him. I also caught that bug, but just threw up a couple times over about 8 hours. That was last week, he's been mostly fine since but threw up Sunday morning, and again this morning. No fever at all, but he does have an ear infection.
Does this sound like it could be an allergy to sosmething? He also has some eczema on his face that comes and goes but we can't figure out why. Any other ideas? I'm so tired of cleaning vomit off everything in our house!!
Have you thought about any changes to either of your diets? If you think there has been a change, then I'd bring him in with that information. I'd guess the doctor would ask you that and then probably tell you to try eliminating different foods.
Anecdote: O had diarrhea for months last spring, so we finally brought him in and they did a stool sample to check for foodborne illnesses and a couple other things, then we went to a pedi GI who had us eliminate certain foods. In the end, he got a strong dose of something that would counteract the bacteria in his intestines and that's what did it. I can't remember the name of it, but it was refrigerated and a 14 day course. Finally figured out that his ear infection, when he had amoxiccilin (also had lots of yogurt and culturelle), was the start of all of it. The amoxiccilin messed with his gut bacteria and he needed these meds to rebalance.

A few years ago my son had a stomach virus, then a week later threw up again, then the following week again. I brought him to the doctor since no one else in my house was getting sick, it didn't seem like it would be a virus. Turns out he had an ulcer, likely caused by intense vomiting during the actual stomach bug. We had to get him pepcid and a bland diet for a few weeks and he was fine. Its worth taking him to the doctor to have checked out.
Did he throw up after eating the same thing the night before both of the last 2 times?
Stomach bugs can live in your intestines for about 2 weeks after you stop having symptoms, so you can easily re-infect yourself if you aren't washing your hands after you use the bathroom or I guess in your case change diapers. He isn't shoving his hands down his diaper or any other bad habits is he? I know its hard with an 18 month old. There is Clorox Healthcare Hydrogen Peroxide spray/wipes that will kill the bug. Regular Clorox wipes DO NOT kill the stomach bug.
I also agree with taking him to the doc if he doesn't improve soon. GL!
Thank you all! There doesn't seem to be a pattern other than after nursing, and we haven't been eating any new foods lately. I'll pick up some of the Clorox healthcare wipes, I hadn't heard about those so thanks for the tip! I'm also going to pick up some probiotics, I should probably take those too anyway. Thanks everyone!
