My H and I have been talk about when and if we're going to have a third but I'm sort of worried about possibly having a deteriorated placenta again. My OB thinks that's why Calvin may have had a low birth weight for 39 weeks (5.6 lbs) and why the nurses said he looked closer to 38 weeks gestation. But maybe not since Lincoln was 6.5 lbs at 40+3. And we don't know if it had anything to do with him having pustular melanosis or if that was just random.
I know that is usually happens between 41 and 42 weeks, if at all, so my OB was pretty surprised when she discovered I had it.
I don't currently- but it's one risk for uncontrolled GD. I would think they would do BPPs for you regularly since you had it last time and it can help monitor. They started my BPPs and growth ultrasounds at 32 weeks this time to make sure everything stays on track
My placenta was not in great shape but that's attributed to ICP. I am pretty sure it was sent for pathology but I don't remember the outcome of that. I discussed with my OB at my 6 week checkup what her thoughts were regarding a third pregnancy and she said she felt comfortable with me going for it as I am already monitored so closely.
I think I would schedule a meeting with your OB to discuss it.

The ob mentioned that mine was starting to die when A was born. He held it up and showed me the dying part, I don't know the bad from the good and had zero interest in seeing it personally.
With D I required a manual removal (that hurt like a son of a bitch) with A, if possible, I delivered it before A it came out so quickly.
He didn't make a big deal of it and since we're not planning anymore I didn't question it further.
It was a concern for when I was pregnant with Emerson because I am a type 1 diabetic. It's part of the reason I wasn't allowed to go past 38 weeks. Emerson was a 9lb baby though (another diabetic side effect).
I didn't have GD, so that's interesting. Mine wad completely deteriorated. It came out in strips and the rest of it was adhered to my uterus and almost required a D&C to remove it.
I think closer monitoring would for sure be something you would qualify for. They don't deteriorate overnight so they could see any changes and induce if necessary.

That's what I figured, that's why I was wondering if anyone had one and been monitored for it. We had no idea I had it until birth since my last ultrasound was at 28 weeks.
My OB didn't seem concerned when it was brought up at my 6 week check but she did say she had never seen one like it before.
I would follow up again on this alone. That sounds extreme. I would at least follow up to find out if/when you get pregnant if they plan to keep a close eye on everything as if you are high risk. Personally, that would be really important to me.
Nothing personal against doctors and mine is super fabulous but I find them to be a little weird about this stuff. My OB would make a BIG deal about something one week and the next week would be like "oh, no big." I always felt really confused about everything but I trusted her 100%.
I remember you ended up in the OR (or am I crazy?) but I don't remember all of this but I am so glad everything turned out okay. Calvin is such a perfect and adorable little man!

I know GD isnt the only reason for the deterioration but I think they would be proactive and monitor you for it from 32ish weeks on next time since you have the history.
Did you have any of the blood work at 12 weeks? The only reason I ask is they measured my PAPP-A number with my NT stuff and they said that can lead to placenta issues if it's low, including low birth weight.

Hopefully it was just a fluke, but there are also fairly common blood clotting disorders that can cause that. It could warrant some bloodwork or prophylactic aspirin so definitely talk to your doctor.

I totally agree! I think she meant she wasn't concerned, meaning my uterus wasn't affected and I was fine at that point. A possible third pregnancy wasn't brought up at that appt.

That makes sense! I'm glad YOU are okay too I am kind of excited at the prospect of #3 !!!
Besides seeing my ob every week after a certain point, I also saw a perinatal specialist every (or every other, I don't remember) week. I know he was closely monitoring my placenta.

Thanks! Me too, it was pretty scary especially in addition to Calvin's mystery skin thing. I held him for 10 min then He was taken to the NICU and me to the OR soon after. My H was a nervous wreck because he came back to our room and I was gone. He didn't know I had been taken since he had gone with Calvin.
We aren't thinking of even trying for a 3rd until Calvin is around 2 but I was talking to my SIL about birth today (she is due 3/11) so it's been on my mind.
Is there a way they can be proactive so it won't happen again, of if it does, get the baby out sooner? Can they see by sonogram that it isn't doing well? Maybe checking the blood flow of it? I hope it was just something random and not an issue you would have another time.

I'm not sure if it would happen again, I wish I could know. Because I don't even know at what point it could negatively effect the baby. I'm hoping it was just a random occurrence, like Calvin's rash.

At least you have time to research it more before you guys plan on starting to try again.

Yes! We're still not even sure we will have another. We're like 92% done.
Late to your thread, but just wanted to add that I had a calcified placenta, which contributed to L's low birth weight. I was having an u/s and 2 NSTs per week - my OB said if I got pregnant again she would do exactly the same thing, so maybe you would just need more careful monitoring
My dr didn't use that term, but she mentioned that my placenta looked "old" after I delivered L. She said that it looked like I was 41 or 42 weeks (can't remember which) event though I delivered her at 38w3d. She was 5 lbs 15 oz at birth. The fibroids I had were to blame.
