You are using the same rationale for using the word "retard" to describe someone with Down's syndrome as people who use "illegal alien" to describe immigrants without papers. In both cases, the terminology is wrong not because it's inaccurate but because it's hurtful.
It's only hurtful if people use it in a hurtful way.
I'll use whatever word you like, but you're kidding yourself if you think the word makes a difference. SPEDS was used in the same way people wrongfully use retarded. Do you think kids today aren't saying "you're challenged" or whatever word is the new phrase in vogue against kids they're angry with in school. And adults will use it for someone who cut them off in traffic. They're using it wrong, but whatevs.
Then everyone can change the word again instead of teaching their children to be kinder, and they can kid themselves about how evolved and politically correct they are.
