My ergo hurts my back too. I have heard nothing but good things about the Tula. DS hates being worn and since he is my last I can't justify the cost but if I had it to do again I would have gotten a Tula.
I love my ergo and have never had any problems with it. I have heard of places where you can rent carriers, maybe your town has something like that? Rent/borrow before you buy?
We both love our ergo but I've never tried a Tula. I've heard wonderful things, though. If you are able to try before you buy, that would be useful. Ergos do pretty well second hand, so you could put that towards a Tula.
I'm not a huge SSC fan but I'd get a tula over an ergo. The resale value on tula's is really high. They often sell for just as much if not more used. Plus I think they're cuter. I have a woven that works well for me and I have back issues.

I love my Beco. The Ergo worked okay for me in a back carry, but was always sliding off my shoulders in a front carry. I also found it hard to adjust and keep the hip strap sitting at my hips which led to soreness. The Beco fits like a dream, is easy to adjust for my husband, and I can back carry DS forever (23 months; 25ish lbs) in it. I've even thrown DD into in on rare occasions, and been fine. It also comes with the newborn insert, and it snaps right in - it felt less bulky and cumbersome than the Ergo insert.
Edit: It's also really cute. That's maybe not the most important thing, but for like a year that thing was practically glued to me and as big a wardrobe staple as anything in my closet, so having it look nice was a nice perk.
I have always loved my ergo But recently tried a Tula and it was so much better
This was me too. I thought why bother with Tula. Isn't it the same? Then I tired one and it is so much better. I bought the toddler size and I love it. Do you have a local store? At the store I buy from they give a 2 week trial on all carriers. It's nice to know that I can return it.

If price isnt important issue Tula or Kinderpack for sure. Price was an issue for me so I sold my Ergo and went with a nice Mei Tai and it worked great for me and I could get the snug fit I wanted.

We have the beco gemini & love it but ds is very tall and 38 lb so I've looked a little into what our next carrier could be. Might go with a kinderpack or a tula. There are lots of youtube videos that are helpful.
