We have the magna tiles but we have also played with the other brands, not sure if the names. My kids can play with them for hours. They are such a good time suck, If you have a gift giving occasion before then I would go ahead and get them. They had been a life saver during all this winter weather.
They are all great and worth the money IMO. We have Magnatiles and Magformers. Both are played with almost every day. Magformers get a slight edge just because they are easy to travel with.

I researched a bit before buying since they were ds's big christmas gift the year before this one, and I went with a deal on magnetic stick and stack. Basically after reading reviews, brands other than magna tile have slightly weaker magnets, but it doesn't make a difference unless you are buying like 200+ sets to build gigantic things. We have a 100 piece set and the magnets are fine to use all the tiles to build something. We do want more though =). We had a small set of magformers, and a small set was just not enough to do cool stuff with, so we got rid of them since I didn't want to invest in another large set.

We LOVE our Magna Tiles. My mom got the kids a cheap set of magnetic tiles made by Discovery Kids for Christmas, and they didn't hold together well at all. I found 56 piece sets of Magna Tiles on clearance at Target right after Christmas and bought three sets, and they get more use than any other toy in the house right now. The difference between these and the knock off set is night and day.
They can also be used together with other sets, sort of. I would not get rid of any, just add to them. We have 2 small sets and some extra accessories.
Magnatiles. Worth it - even my friends 9 year old daughter loves to play with them. Go for the biggest set or multiple sets - the smaller 36 or 48 piece sets aren't enough to make much.
We got DS a 100-piece set of MagnaTiles for Christmas (he was 2-1/2 the ), and would definitely recommend them. His daycare also has MagnaTiles - they are loved and well-used by so many kids there, and hold up so well!

This - we also have playmags (different shapes and some with wheels) and they work fine with our magnatiles.
