I still don't understand why it is a problem to do it at 4 am if that is the point they know school can't happen. They could wait, but why do they have to? It might be useful for some to know early and what does it hurt?
Throwing a scenario out there-my friends son has autism and the call woke him. Not only does his mom have to deal with the bad behavior from his schedule being thrown off he got woken up early and is miserable. Not everyone can turn their phone off at night. And really what is the benefit of someone from the district staying up all night to make the call to cancel school or not? So someone knows an hour earlier? In places where people have access to internet a phone call is unnecessary. In the off chance someone's internet is down have someone change the voicemail to whether school is on/delayed/cancelled so those needing to leave early for whatever reason know. Calls aren't needed.
I know several people growing up who had jobs starting at six. Had to be there at least 15 minutes prior. they had to drop the kids off at before-school care at 515, so they would be up and out of the house well before then. It happens.
I'm not saying that there are obviously no schools anywhere that have an early start. We don't so it's dumb/unnecessary they call so early.
Can't you just turn your phone on silent? I can't see why this is even an issue. Do you sleep with your phone under your pillow?
Edit: enlighten me about your friend, seriously. Do they co sleep? Can she put her phone on silent or vibrate? How is it waking him?
The school districts just.cannot.win. For every person like you complaining it is too early, there is someone complaining it is too late. I just trust they are making the best decisions they can with the info they have.
We got a call and email last night at 11. I really don't care when it comes
For Friday they called a 2-hour delay the night before and then called off school at 6am. The time before that they called at 4am. I imagine they set the thing to call as soon as they know.

I think the schools try to use a method that's most convenient for the majority. There's always going to be a few that don't necessarily benefit from a phone call, but that doesn't mean it's the case for most.
Plus also, my kid is miserable if we run put of bananas in the morning. It happens.
I don't buy in this day in age people find phone calls necessary/most convenient.
Also lmfao at comparing a typical kid whining over a preferred food item being missed over an autistic kid melting down all day long.
Well I think most of us sleep lighter when we are "on duty". I would be willing to bet if she put the phone on vibrate on her nightstand wh would wake if someone called. In my district you can opt out of robo calls, I'm sure she could do the same.

My point (which I'm really arguing because bored) is making someone to stay up all night to make that determination is dumb and calling people is even dumber.
Please go to your next school board meeting and tell them your plan for calling snow days & delays. Propose doing away with the robo calls. I can guarantee they'll laugh and then there will be outcry about not having calls.
If you don't like it, opt out. I'm sure they have multiple ways of notifying and you aren't required to get the call.

This. This whole complaint is ridiculous. I swear people look for the most benign shit to be upset about.
There are always people that are going to bitch. The schools do it for safety and don't take it lightly (at least my district). I've gotten calls/emails/texts (I get all of them but we can opt out) at 8pm and at 6:20. It's always going to suck for a few people. It's not like it happens all year round. Eta we live 20 minutes from school on gravel and DH has a 45 minute commute. There have been plenty of times in the last 5 winters he's already on his way in and gets a call that says snow day. We love the early phone calls.

$10 says kpouch herself would be the first to start bitching here if school was called the night before then nothing materialized

::bangs head on the table::
Not. Everyone. Is. A. Stay. At. Home. Mom.
Not. Everyone. Has. Internet.
And what is the benefit of staying up all night to make the decision? Because people bitch about closing schools. Its an inconvenience for everyone - parents, teachers, and students. It's done for safety and not taken lightly. Some kids have no place to go if schools close. They wait until they have enough info to make a responsible decision. Sometimes that means waiting until 4:00 to see if roads are easily cleared. I'd be pissed if they made the decision at 4 and waited an hour to let me know, if that meant I had 1 less hour to figure out childcare.

Omfg that kids shouldn't be so sensitive about being reminded of their dead/deployed/absentee parent for weeks on anticipation of the daddy daughter dance, but let's make life harder for lots of people to protect the autistic kids' sleep on the handful of snow days. Fuck.

It is frustrating your friend had to deal with her son's meltdown, but his routine would eventually have been thrown off with school being cancelled anyway. Also, that is obviously a special case.
So if I had a kid whose sensory issues where so intense that a phone ringing sent things spiraling, I'd already be accomdating that situation. No phone extension in their room. White noise. Low ringer. Giving the school my cell phone number instead which is right next to my head and my husband can't even hear on the right setting.
You are unreal -- don't change the name of the father daughter dance because kids with dead parents need to buck up, but change an entire alert system to accomdating one parent who by your description lacks common sense?

I guess I never really thought people got calls about school closing. Growing up, I remember watching the tv and the scroll bar with the schools listed. Ours was at the end, so we sometimes had an agonizing wait ;-). My parents never needed care anyway. They own their own business so it just meant we would be going down to the business part of the property. Lol that makes them sound rich and fancy which isn't the case. I think a call would be fine. Especially since you can opt out or change your ringer or get a text/email. I have the cancellation page of the local news bookmarked on my phone. And if the internet is down, it's the radio or I call my Mom to ask her to check. No big deal.

Also, other olds...do you remember listening to the local radio station to hear the school closings?? That's how we did it here, but we were lucky.to get ONE snow day, so it wasn't a regular thing

I remember sitting by the radio hoping. We would hear every district in the county except our own every time lol! My town growing up was the last to close ever, which felt unfair as a kid and now, as an adult the opposite feels unfair lol!
School closings weren't really a thing where I grew up. I remember one time we had a freak snow storm, and once when the power went out and the generators weren't working.
lol that a kid with autism was sent into a spiral by a phone call. Um reality check that same kid would have been sent into a spiral by a missing school day.
